So is SONIC rebooking VICTOR CALDERONE soon?

So the second OPEN event at Sonic came with another disappointment.. Due to bad weather Victor Calderone was a no show :( Really sucked but only mother nature is to blame... Everyone was really hyped about Calderone's show.. Hopefully Sonic is planning to book him soon.. We are all waiting.

I got to say that NEVIO completely saved the night. His performance was simply AMAZING as he was able to turn everybody's disappointment around and we all had a great time. His music selection was near flawless, relentless energy and great mixing from the minute he took control of the booth. This just makes me think why Sonic doesn't turn him into a resident on friday nights given he hasn't even been spinning on saturdays anyway... I think he would make a better choice than any of the other 3 Dj's they have as residents for OPEN. BTW, the opening Dj: major sketch. Really tired selection, very predictable and extremely commercial (of the bad kind of commercial). I think Nevio's performance and the crowd's reaction to his set demonstrated that the gay crowd (contrary to popular belief around town) is very open to a more progressive sound, and hopefully Sonic's talent buyer will take notice and realize what the OPEN's crowd wants.

Also the "performances" very really tired. The drag show was just ANOTHER DRAG SHOW. How many more drag shows do we have to endure?!?
There's already Crews & Tango and Zippers for that kind of performance. And how about the "SHOWER" shows, seriously... Most people I talked to all agreed on how really tacky and irrelevant the whole thing was... EMBARRASING, better. I wonder why do they only bring this kind of show for the gay crowd. I never see any ZANZIBAR, JILLY's or whatever exotic dancers performing on a saturday night at SONIC. Is this a condescending attitude or just prejudice..? Whoever is in charge of the entertainment and other "creative" duties at SONIC really needs a REALITY CHECK (or a pink slip). That kind of entertainment is OLD. Mr. Talent Buyer, did you buy that talent too..??

Please bring Nevio back, he turned it out. Gdet rid of that tired entertainment, keep it simple and focus on the music. the money you spend on stupid shows should go to hire better DJ's. And bring Victor Calderone soon... Fans are waiting..

Prejudice? Are you ing kidding me?

Here is what I know:

1. Sonic IS trying to get Calderone back...I hear it could be as soon as this month!

2. The stereotypical "gay" performance crap that you and a lot of us find tired, boring, and passe....is being drven by and booked by the "gay" Creative Director. Unfortunately, he is "stuck" in another paradigm...and he thinks he is still on Church street. You can't claim prejudice in this case....we appear to be doing this to ourselves!

My two cents....and why you WON'T see me at Sonic on Friday nights...and why I CAN'T get enough of the place on Saturdays!

I don't want to get into the drama related to the "entertainment", but do have to say Nevio saved the party. Yes, Nevio. I know people have had negative things to say about him, but as a "headliner" he really played well. I was never a big fan of him opening in the past, but he was really on last Friday. The opening DJ was really bad...I couldnt wait for him to get off. Whatever he played was really tired and boring, and the sound was horrible as well. Nevio came on after the drag show and the vibe changed right away. I also have to say I havent heard the sound so great at Sonic in a long time. Nevio knows how to play that system a lot better than most DJ's. I left around 5:30 and the club was still full. Sonic management handled Victor's cancellation really well. I left having a great night out. Looking forward to the resecheduled date for Calderone!

I think the whole point of Fridays at Sonic was to bring MORE entertainment, make it crazier and have a bigger show.. and those who are interested in that should attend and enjoy it.. If you're not interested in all that which from what I can tell then keep coming on Saturdays instead of Fridays, I don't think the point of this friday/saturday division was for straight/gay crowd, it was more for preferences and what people like...

If you like to keep it simple and focus on the music then you should be at Sonic on Saturdays.. It's your fault you choose the wrong parties..

Also, a lot of DJs have been cancelling on Toronto lately due to weather.. I hate it too and would probably be really mad if a dj i came out to see was not there, it's a HUGE disappointment - but it's not something to blame the club itself for being disappointing..

hopefully you get what I mean

From MSN ENCARTA ONLINE DICTIONARY:

prej·u·dice

noun (plural prej·u·dic·es)
Definition:

1. opinion formed beforehand: a preformed opinion, usually an unfavorable one, based on INSUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE, irrational feelings, or inaccurate stereotypes.

I do believe the word prejudice applies, otherwise, as I stated, why no shows of erotic nature (namely, gogo dancers/shower shows) are featured on a regular saturday night? If you have a reasonable answer, then I'd like to know... Actually, that question (and I quote you: "Are you ing kidding me?") did come to my mind last friday night at Sonic, but I do not use that kind of vocabulary, not even in online forums.... :o

I agree with you...
But hey, I don't think I'm that far off...
If you read Fairy Godfather's post he also talks about "stereotypical performances" on his post, i dont seem to be the only one who thinks this way. One reason why the Church Street scene is so tired is because of mentality like this.

Chikaladka, If I chose to go on friday night is because Victor Calderone was going to perform, he's one of my top 5 DJs... I was disappointed he didn't show up but Nevio totally turned it and gave us a great performance. I go to any club that offers me the music that I like. But i also happen to be gay and it sucks that the gay scene has been turned into a laughable shadow of its past, and it's because of promoters who control the clubs and don't offer anything interesting. Only reason why they in business its BECAUSE THERE'S NOTHING ELSE TO DO and people just go because they want to hang out with their friends.

Nowadays, thanks for the internet, clubs' management can hear their customers through forums like this. I voice my opinion and that of the people I know, who usually never come to these forums. I like Sonic a lot and would like it to be better and better, that's why I express my views here, since I don't know any of the people in charge at the club, otherwise I would express my opinions in person. They might not listen to me, but hey at least I try.

Hey Andy...welcome to the new weekly "gay" forum....

Seriously, don't be too hard on this guy...he is clearly on our side...and just really frustrated about the sterotype...that we can't/won't enjoy a night in a dance club unless there is a drag show...gogo boys...and shower shows.

Sonic COULD save a ton of money!
