I want to buy a telescope to view stars etc. Any one have any experience on what is good and what isn't for the price etc?

Giant listing telescopes on sale at Amazon (*):
http://www.amazon.com/s/102-8117440...dex=electronics

A forum for amateur astronomists: http://www.starastronomy.org/cgi-bi...Board=equipment

Look at what the people are buying and selling for, and check out the other sub-forums (they have a 'make your own' forum).

http://shopping.discovery.com/categ...d=40587878-27-0

Telescopes for beginners and up on that discovery link.

More telescope stores:

This was painlessly easy. Stop being lazy.

Edit: No real need to get other people's opinions here, just look at all the links, google for telescopes and see average prices.

If you want to have a better understanding of value, then learn about the capabilities of each telescope, what you want to do and just compare.

Meade is a good make. They come with huge manuals of locations, and you type in a number on the keypad, and it turns towards that star/galaxy in the universe.

Okey dokey... I am a bit of a star gazer myself, but since moving to the city it's kinda gone to .

Firstly you need to find a reputable place to buy a scope from... I am talking about NOT a camera store or a national geographic store. Go to a telescope, binoculars or optics store where there are people that know what they are talking about and care about what they sell to people. The other places mainly have only basic knowledge to sell it to you but that is about it, not to mention they use lesser quality optics.

For a first scope I recommend not spending more than $500-$600. I suggest getting something that is not absolutely huge or a white elephant if you will, you will just get discouraged packing it up and taking it places at 1am. I suggest a reflecting telescope on an alt/azimuth stand, there a great way to start out and learn about how it all works. Meade are great scopes but there a bit of a commitment because there so expensive... you want to make sure its a hobby you would like to stick with.

I am assuming you already know about Right assention and declination and how the stars are mapped... either way go to one of those recommended sites and read up there... they will explain all.

It really is an awesome hobby and massive fun when you don't live in a light polluted area like a city.

Just don't expect hubble quality images from a 400x900 reflecting scope though man... Either way if your stoned I doubt if you will notice.
