Finally got a chance to listen to this puppy.
Let me start by once again saying, though you may not be the best technician on these forums as far as DJ'ing goes, your mixes are by far and away the most enjoyable. I've not heard one yet that I haven't fallen in love with immediately. If I were an exec, I would sign you. Period.

02: Dousk - Anagram (Chris Nemmo Mix) [Klik Records] |
What a way to start a set. I've noticed that your first tracks usually suck the listener right in, and Hinterglem is no exception. The high hats hint at some funk right off the bat, and when that bass drops at 35 seconds, my toe starts tapping and my head starts bobbing. However, right away I can tell this is going to be a banging set compared to your others. The whispers are downright scintillating, and when the ethereal synths kick in I got tingles. To me the most important track of a mix is the first. You either grab the listener or you don't. This track had me hooked, and wondering what would come next. But seeing as how you DJ'ed and didn't produce, let me move on to the mixing.
The funk went away a little bit with the introduction of the new track, and in its place is something a bit more proggy. The layering in the back of the tracks never really dropped -- the one replaced the other very nicely. Anagram feels a bit more like the calm before a storm at first, and coming after a funky intro it's a bit of a letdown for me. However, it doesn't last long, and soon the fun is back.

03: Markus Enochson feat Masaya - For You To See (Tiger Stripes Dub) [Sonar Kollektiv] |
The mix flows very smoothly -- so much so that I wasn't paying attention the first time and missed it. I haven't heard this track before, but I imagine I'd agree with Montana that the vocals may be better -- the bits that drop in sound intriguing enough, and not at all like a typical house vocal. This track, for whatever reason, gives me the image of driving through the developing world. It invokes some sort of mysteriousness and sadness I can't put my finger on. I kind of wish this track lasted longer -- it transports you somewhere altogether else.

04: Sebastien Leger - Cosmonite (Original Mix) [Circle Music] |
Again, seamless. This is starting to feel like a real journey now. The breakdowns are nostalgiac somehow. You've done a fantastic job with constructing a mood for this mix, and all four tracks have stayed very true to it, even if I didn't guess what it would be after the first track. I have a feeling that tracks 2 and 4 would do little for me on their own, but in the context of their placement in this mix, they complement the far superior first and third track quite well, and work as great bridges between turns in the feel of this mix's flow.
| quote: | 04: Sebastien Leger - Cosmonite (Original Mix) [Circle Music]
05: Andrea Palazzo - The Sound, The Beat, The Rhythm (Original Mix) [Cut & Reso] |
Cosmonite builds over the course of the track, and by the time the Palazzo track begins to come in, there's more energy infused into the mix than there had been during the very laid back, almost apathetic vibe given by For You To See. The funk is back a bit in this track, though in a much more subdued manner than I'm used to from you. This track could have been lifted straight from a late 90's Sasha set, and I just feel like getting in a car and speeding through the night.

06: Zeebo - Hero (Moonbeam Remix) [Helvetica Recordingz] |
Ok, this mix felt jarring. The bass was different, and the synths don't mesh as well as the previous tracks had. There's also a small gap at one point when the melody of Hero phases in. I also didn't like this track as much. It is similar to previous tracks, but it's too haphazard in construction for my taste. I'm starting to lose sight of the tone set by the first four tracks... the edge has been taken off the mix and a techy superficiality been laid over it. Up to this point, this mix had felt very human -- almost emotional. Now it's starting to feel more mechanical. Not that tech is a bad thing, but for me this set had a lot more personality than that up til now. Can probably chalk that up to personal preference though.

07: Eelke Kleijn - Import Bride (Original Mix) [Baroque Limited Records] |
Good transition. Kleijn is techy, which is the direction this mix seems to be headed. The vocal adds some interest to the track. This is obviously a push to make the mix more danceable, and is great for the club, though it isn't my cup of tea.
| quote: | 07: Eelke Kleijn - Import Bride (Original Mix) [Baroque Limited Records]
08: Groovemaster K & Daniel Garcia - Some More (Dub Mix) [Conya Records] |
Ok, now this track I really like. It's far more housy; less tech, and more soul. The personality is back with this one, though it's a lot more like "screw nostalgic introspection, I'm gonna let loose and have fun." Again, this reminds me of a Global Underground vibe -- some nondescript club in the developing world where sweat and energy reign supreme, where people go to forget the problems all around them, and where for the night, music is the answer.
| quote: | 08: Groovemaster K & Daniel Garcia - Some More (Dub Mix) [Conya Records]
09: El Greco - Nightwatch (Chris Nemmo Remix) [Swift Records] |
This is the only track that I was familiar with before listening to this set, though not this remix. I like this Chris Nemmo fellow -- there's a lot of emotion invoked in his productions. For me, this is a great late night track, where the energy has perhaps neared its peak, and people are really starting to lose themselves in the music. It drives hard, and definitely keeps the mind and body moving.
| quote: | 09: El Greco - Nightwatch (Chris Nemmo Remix) [Swift Records]
10: Jerome Isma-Ae - Stars In Your Head (Original Mix) [Jee Productions] |
Once again, seamless mix in terms of technique and mood. Another track that continues the same feeling, and the vocal only serves to personalize the music. The night is progressing quickly toward a peak, and the music is starting to get a bit more of a filthy groove to it.
| quote: | 10: Jerome Isma-Ae - Stars In Your Head (Original Mix) [Jee Productions]
11: Episodic - Nothing This Day (Eelke Kleijn Mix) [Primal Recordings] |
I was worried about seeing another Kleijn production, but I like this one much more. I've gotten lost in this mix again, and have reestablished that connection that was lost in the middle section. A very danceable number, but it keeps the groove going, and I'm still lost somewhere in a foreign and exotic world.

12: Common Ground - To Be Given (Original Mix) [re*brand records] |
Funky and delicious :)

13: Sunset Strippers - Swear (Hoxton Whores Remix) [Direction Records]
|
The last track is another important one, and what a clutch time to drop your first vocal. The vocal comes in and snaps the listener back to reality, and makes the vibe laid down over the past hour much more human. This is a stormer to end on, and believe me, I'm disappointed to see this set come to a close. The beauty of this set is that it didn't need to evolve much from beginning to end -- it did in a lot of ways, but not drastically. The tone and pace of the mix was interesting at every moment along the way (with the exception of tracks 6 and 7 -- I didn't care for those), and Swear draws it to a close in a very satisfactory way.
I absolutely love the first five tracks of this mix. After that it gets a bit more on the mediocre side for me, but once you set that mood you had me hooked regardless. Though I probably would have prefered you expand on that introspective nostalgiac vibe at the beginning of the set exclusively, the dancable tech section by no means unlistenable, and this is a set that will likely require several more listens for me to appreciate fully. I liked that you reconnected with the intro vibe towards the end. The middle was somewhat forgettable, as you got lost a bit in some tech sounds that I didn't feel belonged in this set.
The highlights for me were tracks 1, 3, 8, 9, 11, 13.
I don't know if it's just the fact that I'm writing a gajillion papers about Africa right now, or what, but this mix really invokes the image of a night out in some African metropole, where class is met with a seedy layer of filth so common to the developing world. I imagine a drive through deserted streets in shantytowns and an arrival at a dirty hole in the wall club, where all the cosmopolitans of the city congregate and lose themselves in deep and meaningful music where social status, race, and history are all superficial. This is the kind of place people go to in order to forget their history and all the burden that comes with it, just for one night.
Again, a class effort, and one that will ensure I am back for more next time!
Cheers! |

^You did know that she made this mix using MixMeister?
Track selection was good. Generally I enjoyed the flow of the set.
The strength of your set is definitely in the beginning. They grab the listeners attention.
Will check out further mixes, esp. when you actually mix :p |

holy snap! thank you SO much for the in-depth review! it really means a lot to me that you took the time to write out such detailed thoughts about the mix, and it really helps me to view my creation from another perspective, which is always important.
i find it fitting that the mix reminded you of a "foreign and exotic world" because it has the same effect on me - except in my case it reminds me of Greece.
glad you enjoyed it, and again... thank you soooo much for such a great review! :D
