Vinyls,CDs,laptop DJs...

I somehow look at it this way. If you wanna laptop DJ, you should master the vinyls and CDs first. If you wanna CDJ, then you gotta at least master the vinyls first.

I just can't have respect for someone who laptop DJs but if you ask them to try to do it with some turntables, they give you a lost look because they don't know how.

But aside from that, what direction do you all see the world of DJ-ing moving to?

vinyl will eventually just die....u dont need it anymore with all the advantages that cd's can offer u. only idiots who are living a bit too much in the past will hate a dj for not using vinyl or not knowing how but if u can rock it with cd's why should that matter?

a "laptop dj" doesnt really count as being a dj imo though, thats just either for tryhards or people having a bit of fun, mucking around with some tunes, etc.

Just more computerized in my opinion, Ableton Live, etc. Some DJ's will still use turntables because they like them, some will still use CDJ's because they like them. Really depends on personal preference, however I can see more laptop DJ's emerging in the future because of Ableton.

Who cares? A DJ is just a dude playing tunes. Nobody cares if the bus driver drives stick or automatic.

imo its the end result that counts not how you get there.

100% agree. The crowd won't care most of the time as long as your track selection is good. I preferred to learn a more manual hands-on approach as I was sick of mixing on the computer, so I bought some cdjs and a mixer last July. I definitely see the advantages programs like Ableton and Torq bring to the setup, and I will most likely integrate one of them later. For now, I'm enjoying the raw power of the cdjs and mixer setup.

If there is new technology that can bring out your creativity and skills, I'm all for using it.

I dunno man, I agree & disagree. Laptops are great tool for competent, good DJ's but they're also a fastrack route for lazy wannabees & n00bs. For sure there will be a big DJ in the near future who cannot do the basics for themselves but thanks to Ableton will sound brilliant - is that really a good thing? I'm not knocking Ableton so for anyone who says "Ableton adds creativity blah blah" you've misunderstood my point.

why would it matter though, that he can't mix on vinyl? it doesn't make his sets any different if he could or couldn't IMO. though i kinda see your point. i myself chose cdjs about 4 years ago i think because i thought vinyl is a dated and over expensive medium. still i'm not heading into ableton or anything like that because i can't see myself having as much fun clicking a mouse and doing everything on a computer as i have on my cdjs and mixer. but if someone can have as much or even more fun playing on ableton then more power to them, though it does make djing easier i feel and lowers the "intro step" pretty much.

I can use all of them. Started on vinyl, but I don't agree with you. There is nothing magical about poly vinyl chloride. It's just a polymer. Not a very new one either.
