Milwaukee is one of the most segregated and racist cities i've ever been to. it sucks. you can seriously draw a line between where the "black" / "bad" neighborhood ends and the "white" / "good" neighborhood begins. it doesn't surprise me that people here are such bigots, because if you turn on the local news any night of the week you're going to hear several stories of rape, murder, burglary, kidnapping, etc... that ALL occured in Milwaukee's Northside (aka the "bad" neighborhood).
but where i grew up (Peekskill, NY) was not like that at all. i'm not saying i lived in the perfect little city, in fact we had plenty of poor people and a fair amount of crime, but we definitely didn't have race problems. black, white, latino, asian, whatever.. it didn't matter what color your skin was or what class you were a part of. i never heard kids use racial slurs against each other in school. there were never any race-related fights. race/class just didn't determine who our friends were. in fact my best friends during high school were 3 black dudes.
sooo, yea.. moving to Milwaukee was quite a shock for me. i remember going to a house party a few months after i moved here, and there was a black guy there. back in NY that would've been no big deal, but because i hadn't hung out with any black people in such a long time i was just so surprised and it felt sooo weird. i hated it.
i think how/where you grew up has a huge impact on how "racist" you are. so i totally understand why my friends in Wisconsin make racist comments, even though it always makes me cringe. i just don't see race that way because of how i grew up. |

I'm more classist then racist. Unfortunately, as certain races are dispoportionally represented in certain classes many may believe I am racist. |
I think that's a very good response mate. I tend to avoid certain classes of people (mainly the white trash generation we have here at the moment who're very violent & moral-less) Growing up in an area which at one time had very very black & asian ethnicities, things have changed a lot, our football team were all white except a chinese lad & 2 black lads, and as someone who's grown up on football & cricket here, where many of our best sportsmen are black, i've never had a problem at all of them. The asians is a harder thing, simply because many pakistanis/bangladeshis' have moved over & taken over their own areas, with many no-go zones, knife crime & a lack of english being why many people avoid such areas & people. It's probably a bit racist, but overall they're the only people who don't seem to mix with others as often. Obviously some 2nd/3rd generations make it easier but others don't |
