Premier Dalton McGuinty is defending a proposed 25 per cent pay raise for Ontario politicians as "the right thing to do."
Members of the legislature have extended their sitting until next week to make sure they pass legislation to get their $22,000 raise before the Christmas break.
McGuinty says he didn't want to revisit the salary issue at first, because not giving his elected colleagues a raise would have been the easy way out for him.
He admits he changed his mind about the raise, but says the easy thing would have been to say "forget about it."
McGuinty says it's not fair that Ontario politicians make only 60 per cent of what their federal cousins, so he's bumping that up to 75 per cent.
New Democrat Peter Kormos vows to donate his $22,000 raise to charity to remind voters what the Liberals and Tories gave themselves for Christmas 2006.

So you're telling us to vote NDP? Afterall, it's not like the PC are against this.
To be honest I think they need a raise and it's long over due. Even with this increase they will only be making marginally more then I do. I certainly wouldn't take on all the hardship and responsibility of being an MPP for $110K/year. RJ's right, you need to pay according to the caliber of people you want to attract to the job.... at $88K there are few people qualified to be an MPP that would actually consider it... most would have to take a significant pay cut, even at $110 most will have to take a significant pay cut. |

hope not. seemed rather logical.
22 grand may be a bit much, but an increase in pay will bring an increase in quality of leadership.
Hope this opens up a new pool of quality leaders. |

At first I was outraged at this pay increase, then I had that very thought. It made me think of going into politics, so the logic holds true, at least for me.
I don't know where I heard this, but it readily applies:
'the government can never attract the best and brightest away from business, because they just cannot afford them' (very loose quotation), but I think you get the idea.
I would how ever like to see some stats on how often they get raises, and for how much. |

I did once as my yearly raise.
Now I'm lucky if I get a 2% yearly raise.
Boy, working for govt is so hard. :p |
