...is quickly becoming my favorite magazine. It seems like one of the last few publications that actually delivers on the news and current events, with excellent writers and reporters. I'm so tired of weak newspaper articles or newsweek style stuff that is loaded with useless facts, containing little backstory or history. Even the Los Angeles Times has been getting really crap lately...the articles have no substance, you finish a huge piece and you still feel like you dont have the full story.
I also like the fact that their articles are wide reaching in terms of subject matter.
Plus theres always great sarcastic cartoons for those who get bored reading... |

I like "intellectual" news magazines.
The New Yorker is a good one. I also like The Atlantic.
The Believer is good for a snobbishly funny / satirical slant on current events and culture. McSweeney's, too.
For the literarily oriented, few can top the New York Review of Books, and the London Review of Books is good as well.
And of course Nature for the scientifically inclined... |

wow about time you discovered that magazine :stongue: :stongue: :stongue: :stongue:
It's quite possibly one of the oldest running publications along with Life magazine, National Geographic etc
I bought this over the weekend as a xmas gift for my sister who lives back in the US:

It's about 1/2 and 1/2 - Yes there are plenty of well written and insightful articles that are seemingly more pertinent to today than what appears in most newspapers, but there is also a lot of pretentious rubbish in the New Yorker that one has to wade through.
Massive respect to whomever it was that brought up Nature, absolutely oustanding Environmental Ethics writing. |

I found they are getting less and less of that, especially if you stay away from the critics/reviews area at the back :p
They had a fantastic article on the acidification of the world's oceans last week, and a few weeks prior was an excellent article on Lagos Nigeria. Real eye opening stuff. And when you watch CNN or Fox afterwards you just feel like smashing the TV. |

I think I'm just not old enough for the New Yorkers sense of "culture" yet ;) |

Well, I'm not their average reader, but I dont really feel like I need to fit in with their "culture" to read it. I like good writing and articles that tell me more than just "this guy signed this law so now this". New Yorker articles are like "this guy signed this law because he grew up in a rich family and his dad handed down this company to him, where he made this friend who now works at XXX Corp, and this law helps that company, so now this"
if that makes any sense lol |
