Somedays....

Ok, so we all start somewhere. After a couple months of practice, I was to the point where I could finally enjoy the music (with the few flaws in mixing I made or whatever) rather than just enjoy the mixing part. But recently (today especially) NOTHING seemed to go right. I couldn't even enjoy listening to some of my favorite songs cause I couldn't even get a decent mix out of them. I'm not talking beatmatching, but actually mixing it... Maby I'm just starting to be more critical of myself. I need some better playlists of music...

Oh, I know... It's cause I hit the promotion forum and got some of your guys' stuff and listened with a more critical ear than I have ever listened with, and I just can't get it to sound like some of the rest of you guys... Keep listening to the good stuff and listening for how it's mixed just makes my stuff sound more and more like crap... I think that's it...:whip: :whip:

Time for bed...

It's not so much your playlists, it's probably related to your mix placement and techniques etc. DJing is so much more than just beatmatching.

Give yourself time to learn this stuff as it doesn't come over night. Read up on some of the finer points of mixing, EQ, Phrase matching, Harmonics, Tricks and so on.

You just need to be patient with it. Try and identify what exactly makes the mixes differ and then try and copy it. Copying stuff is a great way of learning things and will teach you to discover some of your own techniques along the way.

Seriously, hang in there. And if you feel inclined PM me a link with your mix and I would be happy to give you contructive feedback.

Cheers

It takes years.

Everyone goes through this. I've been trying to mix for over a year now and I'm still making a major mistake per mix. I know how you feel about being critical of yourself, as I say to myself "most of the other DJs have this down by now. I'm falling behind!"

We all learn at a different pace. Just take your time, relax, and have a laugh once in while (remember this is supposed to be fun!)

It's going to take some time adjusting to a new mixer.

My old Stanton RM80 broke after I abused the hell out of it playing hard techno so I bought a xone62.

Very nice.

Though the 2 mid EQ thing is going to take some adjusting in my transition.

Plus the filters which confused the hell out of me at first.

And the curved faders I don't prefer over the DJM style knobs. Harder to do tricks.

So it's kinda like learning again.

Xones sure do sound nice though :)

I just fixed the pitch on my technics 1200s after it had been stuffed for a long time. They where so out and stuffed that I was used to all the jumps!
I replaced them with new ones and even zeroed them perfectly.
For the first 20 minutes or so of mixing it was a bit hard.

^-- Hehe, still better with computers than with mixing....

Thanks for the encouragement. I still have fun messing with it! Just wish when you improve by picking up a new aspect it didn't sound worse at first than before you implemented it... =p

Got another question, but I guess it requires a different thread...

generic
I remember what that was like, I thought I was good after about 6 months :stongue:
The frustration will keep you improving
