Advise To Sonic State

Guys, I started this thread cuz I wanted to make sure that the sonic state boys read this. Please, if anyone's going to post here, make it a positive thread of suggestions, rather than complaints, disses, etc.

I was trying to stay positive about WG against all odds with everything going on. Now I suggest the following for the SS boys for future endeavors. I still have a lot of respect for SS for even trying to pull something like this off at great risk to yourselves, so don't take this negatively, it's not meant that way:

1. Please don't promise what you're not sure you can deliver. Don't get me wrong, happens and I know you guys tried beyond your best. But if you promise less and then deliver more, that'll be to your credit, rather than the other way around.

2. Know when to quit for your own sakes. My suggestion is to cancel the event entirely at this point. If you want to organise something different (with a different name) in the summer, that's great. But trying to drag this saga on longer will just annoy more people, and if you don't pull it off you will lose more supporters. Now, if you do go ahead and hold something in a few weeks, I'll be the first to go if I can make that weekend, just so you know.

3. You really owe people a BIG apology. I'm sorry, but after all the dragging on and the speeches (sorry, don't mean to ridicule, I did think they were beautiful and meant from the heart) it's just not enough to post a short message saying essentially "not this weekend, not cancelled yet, stay tuned". You should post a formal apology post on the main toronto site and give people what they want, a true account of what happened. Even if it means telling us that you knew things weren't working out but didn't tell us cuz you wanted to try your best and make it work, I think people will respect that. Silence at this point they won't respect. In the apology, you might want to acknowledge the overwhelming support you've been getting from the community, more than any other promoter would ever get (and with good reason, cuz you've given more than any would ever give).

4. Immediately give people options on how to get their money back. This will restore some faith right away for those who've lost it, even if not everyone decides to exercise that option.

5. Put Wintergalactic.com back online immediately so all those people who bought tickets but are not on TA can get info to see what's going on. I've already had friends ask me if you guys have skipped town with their money, cuz they have heard it's cancelled and the site is down.

As for specific suggestions on running an event, I have no expertise and will not even attempt, though some others have given good suggestions in other threads. Other TAs might wish to add a few here.

Goodluck to you guys.

1. Don't throw parties between the EAster holiday and April 27th. College and university students are having final exams. I agree with Articboy, if it is financially feasible, kill the party to simply end all nonsense now and put forth a renewed effort on a new summer party. (Quite certain this would generate more/better interest, many people already have bad memories and ill feelings over this whole fiasco, there may be little point now in salvaging what is left).

2. Perhaps the recent success of your last parties made you guys jump the gun a little on this one? Reassess your contingencies and plan a more realistic approach to the next party? Such an exhorbant investment into a failed party could put you guys into financial ruin and of course we would not want that at all.

3. Work closely with other promoters to see that your future event does not conflict with theirs, since you had to move the original date of the party at first because of a party that was happening at Guv the same weekend.

4. Is there such thing as promoter's insurance?? I know there is bankruptcy protection and business insurance. Maybe look into that?

5. CONFIRM everything 200% !! Overhead costs, legal issues, etc..

Now of course you may have already taken some of these suggestions into consideration or better yet implemented measures to prevent such problems from occuring. But in case you haven't I hope that I have been able to offer some helpful tips.

SS, you have sinned, but yes... sins can be forgiven. I forgive you, but it'll be hard to forget :P

Goodluck with all.

I think that website is still up (won't give you the URL, I'll leave that up to SonicState), but they are having problems with the registrar and their domain name (hackers)...

Anyway, those were some good points, and I agree with most of them...

One last thing - I think it would be a great idea to cancel this event and postpone it for later on... why? Just look out the window! en winter/snow is still here, and I don't know about you, but I would really prefer partying when the weather is nice enough that you don't have to be locked inside...

i agree with this, especially if the party is still going to remain 19+

the large majority of people attending a 19+ event would be in post-secondary education...and i don't know many people that would go to a two-night event on the weekend with finals that week

fantom, all the promoters should stop brining in djs from october till may then? After all, there is chance of cold temperatures and *gasp* snow. You live in canada, cold weather is a reality for 6 months of the year. Just because it's cold outside doesn't mean they should wait till summer to bring big djs over. As far as your montreal comments, I'm sure if toronto was having a party like that you'd rub it in other peoples faces. Sure it's a big expensive, but sure it looks damn amazing. I'm sorry that you're so narrow minded that you wouldn't want to attend a party where there are going to be predominately lesbian girls. Perhaps that's why you love the ty guv so much, because your there just to pick up with the rest of the gino bags that call that place home?

Ok, don't push it bro...

Yeah, it's too en cold here, and due to this weather I missed out on some mad parties this/last year... but also, I've missed a load of partied during the summer, just because they were too expensive (anyone remembers Area:1)...?

And sorry for being so narrow minded, but I don't really find it that appealing to be surrounded by million of lesbian girls... all I need is one or two straight ones, and I'll be just fine.

And who said I love the guvernment? Actually, I love the club itself, but I hate the mofos that hang out there... so, you compare me to gino bags again, and someone's kneecaps are gonna go...

fantom, you hate the "mofo's" from the guv, you try and distance yourself from them; yet you need straight girls there for you to pick up, and you threaten my knee caps over the internet. Perhaps you're having a bad day or something. I think if you re-read what you posted you might also see how it would come off quite "gino".

i need girls to check
i wana fight you

how lame

later "bro"

Hey everyone, I don't post very often but this saga has finally come to an end. I just want to post some of my thoughts. ArticBoy I think you hit the nail on the head. It looks like we all came to the realization that cancellation is the only way out. This has been such a rollercoaster ride that I just want to get off. We bit off far more than we could chew and we are suffering from this more than you know. Our dreams were so big and we were so close; but the odds were against us and everything just came crumbling down. You're right about getting in over our heads and jumping the gun. We made a few bad business decisions and we paid the price. Time was also a luxury we didn't have; too much too late. We made promises, only because we believed and hope that things would work out in the end. But it didn't and we failed to deliver. We dragged ourselves down and we dragged the community that supported us down with us. Believe me we all learned from this and if we ever throw another event again, the utter chaos and disorganization will be a thing of the past.

I am truly amazed the amount of support and loyalty this community has shown, not only for Sonic State but also for the scene as a whole. We give our 100% and you give us 110% right back. Sure there were unhappy and angry people, but we understand your reasons. It’s like, seeing your favourite team you've grown to love, lose a big game. We disappointed you, our community; and that's the biggest loss we face. Nevermind the money, which can be made back; but the respect and the loyalty from our community, is tarnished and earning that back will be a difficult task, perhaps impossible. For those of you who still believe in us and what we're all about, THANK YOU!, and for those of you that we've lost along the way, I apologize on behalf of Sonic State that we've wronged you, we will make amends. The Wintergalactic Site shall be up once when I received official word on the status of this event. We shall also post the details for full refund of your tickets.

Again thank you for all of your support; sorry to each and everyone of you for all the inconveniences and trouble that we've caused.

Pete
