Edit: really, it's a general tendecy of the English language to use weak forms (i.e. vebs whose past tense end in -ed) rather than strong verbs (the bizarre ones where the vowel changes). In spite of what dictionaries might tell you, it's quite easy to mix both forms up, and unless you're a grammar nazi (who should all be exterminated), this discussion is of little importance.
