are IOMEGA's ZIP and JAZ drives worth buying to back up mp3's? |
no they're not. buy a cd-burner or the new dvd burner which i know little about. dvd disks can hold a load of info (a lot more than the usual 700 megs a regular cdr can back up) but i'll let someone more qualified give specs on dvd cd's/drives.

NO. it would be WAAAAAAAAY better to just go buy a separate HDD and copy all of your files and leave it unplugged when you are not backing up.. BU maybe once a month or so and youll be fine. no harm can be done to a HDD when its not 'working' unledd you like magnets.. :toothless

I'm scared of this happenin,56k ere as well, so I back up when I get enuf for a full cd (700MB). I also reinstall o/s every month or so, so I have to really ;)
CDR-W's are quite cheap in the UK £60ish new, DVDR-W are sweet and hold upto 6.4Gig (I think) per disk, but currently about £450 ...... ouch

| dvds hold i think anywhere between 5 and 9 gigs...(the 9 gigs is using both sides) yeah i lost my mp3s once 11 gigs went out the window when my raid array crapped out(striped not mirrored) i was very pissed, but i had about 7 of those 11 gigs on my old hard drive which i put back on my computer.....then like 2 weeks later the raid array crapped out again (you can imagine how happy i was) and i had to do the whole process all over again swapping and redownloading.....now i have 18 gigs....i should probably burn some of these to cds or put them on a spare HDD....but knowing me ill procrastinate and kick myself in the arse later |

forgot about this....another tip for at least some security is get a listing program for your mp3s if you lose them youll at least know which ones you had at that time.....
i use Widget PrintDir you select a folder and it will list every file and folder in there with size and a couple other things...and it makes either .txt or .csv (excel file) which is really nice and organized.....you just have to remember to use it often..i actually should do that now |

How It Works:
Basically when you delete files from a drive, or format your drive you don't actually delete the data on the drive. All that happens is that you delete its record from the Table Of Contents, so 2 speak, so the drive treats it as if there is no data there.
This software 'scans' the drive to look for data and picks up these deleted files etc. Then you can select which files you want to put back and it brings em back 4 u. I'm not sure of all the really technical , hope this makes sense..
It seems to have worked best with singles, i've lost quite a few livesets and all my music videos ;( I got quite a bit of stuff back tho :) It was also a lifesaver as i restored some important work i lost :) Still, i didn't pay 4 it personally, sum1 else did ;)
I gotta get allllllllll this e sorted still tho :( |
