Hi, i have many files including dvd rips, games, mp3s and videos... maybe a couple ot TBs or more...I have all thems in burned dvds and cds and part of them in my hard disk.. im thinkig in purchasing a couple of hard disks to have all my data availabe in my PC... however i dont know too much about that... Firstly I would like to know what is better to store data: SATA or IDE? im looking for a fast and secure system.

are there TBs hard drives? or all are GB... i have seen 500GBs ones and think its a good size...

does big capacity hard drives have any cons??

hope your commentaries.

Thanks in advance!

i'd go with an external 500gb's if you have that much stuff to keep. SATA and IDE refer to internal hard drives that you mount to your motherboard which can get tricky if you have no idea what you're doing. I think a USB2.0/Firewire External HD would do you justice.

Thanks for your quick reply and comment, well i actually know how to mount internal hard drives, however i also have that concern about Internal or external, my first cons about external is the space, i have seen that external hard drives are a little big and im space limited in my room, the desk where i have the PC its full.. but i could sacrifice some other stuffs in case i buy the external... what about the velocity? are USB faster than SATA and IDE?.. or firewire?.. i really dont know anything about the interfaces.. my actual hard drives is IDE though.

Thanks again for your reply!

^^i have the aboved in a 250gb and i haven't nearly filled it up to as much as I need to. I would definitely go external.

SATA is probably the fastest internal interface at the moment. Although you usually have to run SATA drives in an array or striped in pairs. Array of SATA drives is having multiple SATA drives so when one fills up, you daisy chain another and it adds to the Array. Striped is having 2 large drives which essentially looks like 1 drive letter on your computer. Striped is much faster which I reserve for OS and applications and run all my saved data to IDE. Striped allows for data to be stored on 2 drives simultaneously which means it reads/writes faster but you don't get double the storage space.

It seems like USB2.0/Firewire External drives are where you want to go and as stated you can run multiple external drives as long as you have a USB Hub. USB hub is a hub of more USB ports connected on one USB port to the computer. I think 2 500GBs would be MORE than enough.

ok, and how is the performance of just one SATA drive??... have cons having one SATA Drive?.. wich you'd go between ONE IDE Drive or ONE SATA Drive??...

i'd go one large IDE drive before i went one SATA but i'd do external over both if you can go that route.

Thanks for your comments, very helpful... what are the advances of IDE against SATA?.

The latest in external hard drives are the eSATA drives. They will cost you about 30 bucks more than a regular usb or firewire... but they supposedly have the same speeds and performance as any internal HD. They cost more because they come with an IDE card (similar to a firewire card or additional USB card) made strictly for the eSATA HD's.

Up to five times faster than existing external storage solutions (USB 2.0, FireWire)

Provides external data backup and protection at speeds up to 3-gigabits/second interface rate

Allows for a RAID setup with the purchase of an eSATA RAID controller

Enables simple plug-and-play with shielded cables and connectors

I did wet myself at best buy yesterday though. 1 TB Western Digital External 'My Book' drive for 450. Almost bought one... but the other half strongly opposed.
