I dont know anything about cars either and I was extremely hesitant about doing my own pads and rotors but with the insistance of my friend, a copy of the manufacturers service manual and a small tool budget, I was able to get the job done easily. The hardest part was using a breaker bar to loosen the bolts holding on my caliper.
Have you ever seen the people who work in brake shops? If they can do it, you can :p Im not talking about anything to do with ABS and so on, just simply switching out rotors/pads/etc |

unless the brakes have never been serviced during the entire life of the car and the rotors are too thin or have grooves in them... but they could probably be resurfaced rather than replaced.
brakes usually last 30-40k miles, depending on how you drive. |
only certain kinds of rotors can be turned to resurface. the stock focus (or -us, as i like to call it) rotors are economy e. if the previous driver drove it hard and rode the brakes too much Esp if its a manual transmission, it isnt totally out of the ball park for the breakes to be knackered allready. they have a design life of 50K usually... for half decent ones. but the stock ones on teh us arent that great.
I have seen a brand new set of pads and rotors get ed in one day of driving.... so it is possible and the price isnt that bad. assuming they are doing all 4 rotors. cause they cost about 40 bucks a piece and its about 80 bucks for 4 sets of pads... |

yeah, i assumed since Demoted has been driving the car for ~3k miles and it's only got 37k miles, it still has the OEM rotors... but i dunno anything about those. |

Yes a lot of the OEM rotors from Ford and GMH where quite horrid my mechanic was telling me after replacing a set under warranty on my car in less than 20,000km. Resurfacing works to knock out the pitting and grooves but most likely the rotors are warped which means they have to get chucked out.
I got him to pick me up a set of 2nd hand Brembo's 4piston ones and rotors from a wreckers which where an aftermarket option and they've gone for the last 60,000 without so much as a wimper. |
