ok i am looking for a home theater system to go with my samsung 50 inch plasma. i have narrowed the list down after doing some research (consumer reports and reviews on circuit city.com). I figured it would be a good idea to ask here.
consumer reports recommended the following:
Panasonic Home Theater System PAN (SC-RT50)
Yamaha YHT670BL Home Theater System (Black)
Onkyo Home Theater System ONK (HT-S790)
after actually going to circuit city i was also considering the following:
Denon Home Theater System DEN (DHT487DV)
Denon Home Theater System DEN (DHT687BA)
Onkyo 5.1-Channel Home Theater System ONK (HTS894)
I own a sony system that I use for a 27 inch tube tv and it served it's purpose but i wanted to get a really nice one to go with the plasma that i just got. the guy in circuit city said that going with the denon was a good idea because they own (or are owned by i dont remember) boston acoustics so the speakers would be top notch.
ultimately what i would like is a loud, high quality HTIB system that will easily allow me to watch and listen to HD programming on tv and my dvd's upscaled (which i will have to buy a player for if the system doesnt come with it like the cheaper Onkyo)
one of the factors in my purchase will also be what i can get at cost through my brother's job (which is why i put the 2 denon and the more expensive onkyo systems in there)
i know i compiled a long list there but i figured someone out there with a few free minutes and hopefully some knowledge/experience with home theater can steer me in the right direction.
thanks in advance... |

Why not choose the one rated at the top by Consumer Reports?
Onkyo HT-S790

I made the mistake of getting a best buy and picking up the Samsung. Its not bad, but it is being returned for the Onkyo. |

| if i can get enough of a family discount, i think i may go for the more expensive onkyo. my friend who has the same tv got the samsung system to go with it and i dont want only 2 speakers no matter how good they sound. i want surround sound all over the place when i am sitting on my couch... |

The onkyo is a 6.1. The only nice thing with the samsung is that you can have a wireless rear amp to power your speakers. Less wires is always a plus in my book.
The sub from samsung sucked tho. I have a Yamaha dual 8" active subwoofer to add to the deep end of any system... |

rule #1 in home audio - read the reviews but let your ears decide. demo everything, even better if you can take on movie you know well to play on all systems.
I would suggest heading to avsforum.com for ht discussions. |

I got a good deal on the Onkyo Home Theater System (HT-S790) from Circuit City. Bought it on-line "only" and paid something like $439.00 or so, tax included. :)
• 7.1-channel sound
• 8-piece speaker system
• iPod dock-compatible
• XM-radio ready
• Onkyo's WRAT technology
• HDTV-capable
The set up was really easy too. |
