Check out this article from MSP's City Pages. I'm not sure that Minneapolis is the most credible market for these assumptions, but it's interesting none the less...

One universal theme that I have scene in all genres of music is

The genre starts simple
Clever hooks, melodies, and rhythm emerge
The music gets more complex and takes a life of its own
Musicians become contrarians and start stripping down their sound
And it all starts over again
