Saddam Hussein executed in Iraq (BBC.com)
State TV has been showing footage of Saddam Hussein's atrocities
Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been executed by hanging at an unspecified location in Baghdad.
Iraqi TV said the execution took place just before 0600 local time (0300GMT).
Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death by an Iraqi court on 5 November after a year-long trial over the 1982 killings of 148 Shias in the town of Dujail.
Two co-defendants, Saddam Hussein's half-brother Barzan al-Tikriti and former Iraqi chief judge Awad Hamed al-Bandar, were also executed.
"Criminal Saddam was hanged to death," state-run Iraqiya television announced, as patriotic music and images of national monuments were broadcast.
A scrolling headline read: "Saddam's execution marks the end of a dark period of Iraq's history."
The TV station said Saddam Hussein's half-brother and the former chief justice of the Revolutionary Court were also hanged.
US troops and Iraqi security forces are on high alert for any violent backlash. The US State Department has urged all its embassies to increase security.
The BBC's Adam Brookes in Washington says the Bush administration will see the act as turning a page in Iraq - a demonstration that Iraq has a sovereign and democratic government.
A US statement is expected. However, the Bush administration will be keen to portray the execution as a matter purely for the Iraqi government and its court system, our correspondent says |

i was watching the coverage from al jazeera and arabiya.
Al jazeera was pro saddam and arabiya was anti-saddam.
lots of talk but no proof of his execution. |

I just read it on CTV.ca. They said that the execution WAS filmed, there was one camera present.

Maybe...but in my travels I have seen some sick ed up on the internet. I'm sure i've seen worse than Saddam Hussein getting hung...yeah i'm really desensitized.

yes but today was the best day to do it.
Its a holy day in the muslim world, the day of the sacrifice or something.
Usually they sacrifice a lamb to celebrate it, but today its a big fat saddam :) |

30 days was the final deadline, they could execute before that deadline...
And there was a short clip on the AlIraqia satellite channel, they put a bag over his face and he got hooked up to the noose, and they chopped that 0rs head off.
It surely is a memorable day for all those anti-saddams, eid mubarak to them. |

It won't stop the terrorism, but it'll at least give the people affected by his regime a peace of mind, and considering that almost every Iraqi in the country was affected by his rule, I'm sure they're all at rest now, they've been avenged finally.. |
