I have a theory why todays trance sometimes feels so dull, it's because the people who made the music never ever felt the magic of dancing.
Not saying that it's completely true but it certainly can give you an experience to base your music on. The deeper you go the more you get so to speak.

Yeah, I know some people who get really excited about seeing DJs, but then when you see them at the event they're just standing there at the back of the dancefloor with a drink in their hand all night.
I don't really understand it, but whatever floats your boat I guess. |

I used to go to clubs and festivals and dance. It's fun. Nowadays, I don't go to clubs and the only local festival is the DEMF (or whatever they are calling it now). I've always been into trance more so than techno, as far as listening is concerned, because it's more melodic and structured. Techno, and other more repetitive and rhythmic dance music, i'de dance to, but I don't know about an enjoyable listen to it..or chilling out to it.
Over the past few years, i've come to appreciate the deeper, more progressive forms and although they have a beat that is danceable, they also work great as thematic or sound-track pieces. Mark Otten's music is a great example, wish he made more. There's a bunch of others I could list, like Peter McCowan's music.
Personally there is music I like as dance music, but don't care as much about listening to it or chilling to it, like electro or tribal house, or harder techno music. There is definitely music out there that is more chilled out and can be used as either dance music or chill out music, or both. Look at Chicane's older stuff....it's a mixture of trance, ambient and breaks. Ulrich Schnauss, and Amethystium are two great artists who make trance-like music intended more for listening rather than dancing. If you like the melodic and ethereal atmosphere of a lot of trance music, you'd dig these guys. I've been more into them lately than trance music...partially because I don't get to experience clubs and festivals anymore...but maybe someday.
I think trance music, and i've said it before in other posts in the past, could become a type of music not just intended for dancing. It's like what happened with jazz or rock music, starting out as mostly dance music and later turning into more listening music. I could definitely see more artists lowering the BPM, still keeping a steady beat and a melody, and essentially do some melodic ambient-trance music...kind of bringing back the Jean Michel Jarre sound. Amethystium's music i've found is very similar to this idea....sounds a lot like Jean Michel Jarre, just updated. |

| I'm not one for dancing either. Just because something gets labeled as dance music, doesn't mean you can't appreciate it without dancing. It just means that if you did want to dance, this would be the ideal music to do it. ;) |

Whenever I've seen armin, pvd, ferry, tiesto etc, and they play the said 'trance music', there is very little dancing, so maybe just keep listening to them. they should call it electronic bounce music or electronic hand music.
Now carl cox on the other hand....

| I cant help it in a club, once your in the front door you can hear the beats and im drawn towards it!! I used to hate dancing, you know when your out with a bird in some sleazy r n b club, basically only there so you can get laid so you dance to music! then i got into trance and my life changed forever, i dont give a now. it just flows through. To me thats what music is meant to be. So thank you tiesto for saving my life! |
