Whiskey Hotel: The Gulf [trance & chillout] [my first mix ever, please review]

During the months of August through November of last year, I was living in Biloxi, MS....one of the devistated areas from Hurricane Katrina back in 2005.

I've often found it difficult to explain to people what it's like down there....describing in words don't do it....pictures don't do enough justice...so I thought maybe I could explain it via music.

This is my first mix ever, and I don't have any kind of super fancy equipment or anything. I used a program called "MixMeister"....and since it's a trial version, there's a woman's voice that pops up every once in awhile....it's only like 2 seconds, and isn't really that disctracting once you get used to it. I'm sorry for this being there....hopefully people will still listen to this story. The program itself is pretty decent...there's a lot of things that can be done, that I didn't even attempt for my first go around. But I did play w/ the controls and stuff....so all the mixing isn't just a fade in/fade out.

Each track has a bit of a story behind it, even if it is a little insignificant...but each piece of the pie paints a picture of life on the Gulf. This is a mix of trance and chillout...as i'm sure everyone can see from the tracklist. I'd like to go into detail about each here too....I kind of think it's a bit of a necessity to help get across what was going on in my mind and why I picked each track. so here goes nothing.

Will Henning Presents, Whiskey Hotel: The Gulf <---right clicky and you know the drill.

1. Mike Oldfield - Let There Be Light [Hardfloor Dub]
- As the sun rises up over the Atlantic Ocean, white wispy little clouds begin to swirl together. A bit of an ironic statement, that light has come...but reveals a devistation unlike no other.

2. trance [] control - Out There
- I feel that this one sick & mean track....and I can picture that little swirl off in the ocean getting larger and stronger....building until it consumes nearly half of the Gulf of Mexico

3. Funk Harmony Park - Crystal Sky [Original Mix]
- Unlike the name, i'm sure the sky was not crystal when making landfall. Another dirty track with a lot of power.

4. Max Graham - Airtight
- Landfall. An explosion like no other. The wind battering the buildings, the waves crushing everything on the coast.

5. Armin Van Buuren - Precious
- This track still gives me shivers sometimes....I can only imagine what it must have felt like....riding the storm out in your own home. watching all your precious things being washed away. the bass at the end of the track reminds me of being underwater...darkness

6. Deepsky feat Cass Fox - Little Bird [Mike Koglin Remix]
- The sun arises and it's now the morning after landfall. it's been a crazy night...and with the new morning all that seems to be left are the birds.

7. Carrie Skipper - Time Goes By [Floris de Haan Remix]
- Walking around the debris, looking for family, friends, any sign of life. The rest of the world watches in shock as almost the entire coast has seemed to be wiped off the face of the planet. Time goes by....but how long will the hurt last?

8. Paul Jackson & Steve Smith - The Push (Far From Here) [Electric Bath Treatment]
- This track reminds me of New Orleans. all the people left behind...stuck...trying to avoid the rising flood waters. There's only so much police, firemen, and the national guard can do....to try and rescue a city falling to pieces right in front of their eyes.

9. James Holden - Solstice [Original Mix]
- One of the most haunting tracks that I've ever heard, this epic reminded me of driving along State Route 90 in Mississippi and Louisiana....seing towns wiped off the Earth, leaving nothing left but concrete slabs and signs saying, "we'll be back". This mix out of this one is a long one....reminding me that the road to "normalcy" doesn't come quick.

10. Super8 vs DJ Tab - Helsinki Scorchin' [Original Mix]
- A bit back into the uplifting....it's been over a year and a half now...and the areas are starting to recover. Nightlife & the Economy is returning to the Casinos. Mardis Gras is back on in New Orleans.

11. Odyssee - Evolution
- While commerce is making its way back, civilisation and residental areas are not moving as fast. The people who have chosen to stay will rebuild....slowly. But there are many who could not stand the site of the devistation and took off. A bit of a downer for an ending, I suppose....but in reality, that's what life is like around there.

Again, any reviews would be good....and sorry for that stupid lady...but any comments on the mixing, flow, speed, style, etc....

sweet, thanks! i'm really thinking about investing in this program, so i'll eventually buy the real deal...and then....walla! no more stupid lady.

although that would be funny to sample her in later mixes.

I would recommend investing in a program like ableton that is a bit more spontaneous and has many more uses if you're going to invest in mixing software.
Zoso
Count me in, sir. Downloading now!

i've heard some great things about ableton (and some bad things i guess too). and while i'm just a n00b at this sort of stuff, i think spending some $500+ right away is a bit too much.

Airtight, yeah, I'm in.

Edit: And if you take the time to learn Ableton, that $500 will feel very well spent - I assure you :)
