WMC 2007 Hotel Stays?

Hey all,

I'll be in Miami for the WMC this year. I'm trying to decide between getting a place closer to Miami Beach Resort and Spa (where the actual conference will be held) or closer to South Beach where all the clubs/parties/nightlife will be. How far away are the two from each other?

Any recommendations for areas to stay in? Lots of hotels are already sold out so for me at this point it's more about location...

Also, how's public transporation there? Will I be fine with taxis and buses going between the two areas (Miami Beach Resort's farther north) or is a car rental a better choice?

Thanks for your input!

I feel like I responded to this thread already?

anywhoo

Unless you plan on going to the official WMC I wouldn't worry about getting a place close to it. It's about 5 miles from there to where you want to be in SOBE.

I would say stay in SOBE. Most of the day parties are there, and it's just a nice fun place to st ay with lots of shops and places to eat in walking distance. The whole thing is very walkable, so if you only went to parties in sobe, you;d never need to pay for any transportation, imo.

There are also a bunch of parties you are most likely going to want to hit up at the clubs in downtown Miami. I wouldn't reccomend staying in downtown though. It's NOT too horrible and you CAN walk to downtown clubs & ultra, but it's just a depressing place in general. Basically a bunch of skyscrapers and industrial parks with almost no life on the streets. Plus the entire area was under construction last year (not sure if it still is).

Getting back n forth between sobe and downtown is a pain in the ass. I took the bus or cab. Busses are very cheap, but of course, take forever to go anywhere. They took me about 45 minutes on average (I think) to go from my hotel in downtown to the west-side of SOBE. Since the bulk of the parties are on SOBE, I would say stay there, b/c you'd be going from sobe > downtown less than downtown > sobe, and save on transportation. Either way there will probably be lots of traffic to contend with.

I wouldn't rent a car unless you had a confirmed parking spot where you stayed (which will prolly be expensive) and you were planning on going back and forth between the WMC Resort and SOBE a lot. Trying to find parking everywhere is a colossal pain in the ass from the looks of it.

I guess it really depends on what your priorities are and where you will be spending the bulk of your time.

My advice: Stay in SOBE, walk everywhere you can, and take a cab to the parties you want to goto in downtown. If you want to goto the WMC Resort, it seems like a bus would be a good idea since it's a straight shot from SOBE to there and it doesn't seem like there'd be as much traffic up north that way.

ill say this...staying away from SoBe is ALOT cheaper tho......and easier to park a rental car when u arent staying on the beach....

Yeah,.. i'm driving down but I remember the traffic last year, I couldn't wait to just park my car and walk. I just hate paying the hotel parking fees (usually $10+) and then paying for cabs, so staying on sobe and walking is for me....

i always stay at the Holiday Inn Downtown .....i agree, its not the best place to stay ... it all depends on what you want to see .... i pretty much go to parties in downtown ....

i'll be therein MARCH

hm, downtown's an option, i found a place that's really nice with great rates... it's about 4 miles north of the miami beach resort and spa, though. i believe it's like 8-10 miles north of where all the south beach thrills are, so i'd definitely need either a car rental or easy access to the buses. i'm planning on getting incoherent more than just one night though, so hey, maybe renting a car isn't such a good idea :D

heres my 2 cents.....try to stay in south beach if you can still find anything available. i did the rental car thing last yr and it was a total mess, the car got towed, we got lost a few times, etc....i stayed at the holiday inn right next to the airport next to a pink strip club....it wasnt exactly the greatest of hotels, but it was WAY CHEAP compared to everything else we looked at......imo, stay by the beach, you wont be sorry

ps....to hell w/ beach towing

What hotels do you guys know of that would be ok to park a car at?

I will be driving from Atlanta, Georgia and want to stay at a hotel that actually has a parking lot in SoBe that has a place to park. The place we stayed last year had like 10 parking stops, with only $50 dollars a day valet parking.
