The iPhone is first party software ONLY -- i.e. not a smartphone by conventional terms, being that a smartphone is a platform device that allows software to be installed.
Other unfortunate realities about the device:
quote:
* No 3G. We know you know, but still, it hurts man.
Umm. What? Get with the times Apple.
quote:
* No over the air iTunes Store downloads or WiFi syncing to your host machine.
Okay that just sucks. You'd think they'd get some of the better points from the Zune but nooo... They just want to do things their way.
quote:
* No expandable memory.
Is 8GB a lot?
Not at all. Especially when you're placing movies along with your music and pictures onto the hard drive. Not to mention games. This is shameful.
quote:
* No removable battery.
There's the deal breaker.
quote:
* No Exchange or Office support.
No Exchange or Office support?
No thanks.

Oh man.
That reminds me of Trigger Happy TV. I do miss that show.
OH SNAP!
I found a montage for the cell phone clips. lol

Looks like a nice gadget, but (and I'm starting to sound like I'm beating a dead horse in these types of threads) I want a cellphone, nothing fancy plzkthx.
You'll be forced to the dark side eventually though... convergence is the future. Resistance is futile!!

Wow, Yan just pointed out a lot of issues that suddenly made the phone much less attractive. I don't mind the office/exchange support, but no removable battery and expandable memory? Are they serious? How many people have had their iPod battery shot to within 4 or 5 months? And what's the deal with no WiFi synching to a machine? I thought Apple was all about that stuff :conf:

It's like any technology, wait until Version 2 comes out and stops breaking down.. as much.

More 'meh' news:
quote:
* It was again confirmed that customers must agree to a two year contract, even if that requires customers to renew their current service.
WHAT
THE
ING
HELL?
I'm not even considering purchasing this phone and yet this enfuriates me.
quote:
* There is no iTunes revenue sharing.
Cingular loloses.
quote:
* There will be no physical branding on the iPhone but Apple branding. The only AT&T / Cingular branding will be on-screen where the carrier readout is shown.
Nothing quite like a multi-branded phone FTW!
quote:
* Although nothing was confirmed, Cingular made it sound as though users might be able to expect a specially bundled data plan for the iPhone.
Well... I don't know what to think of this. It was definitely good for Sidekick and Blackberry users. Can't see how Apple and Cingular can screw this one up. Doesn't necessarily mean it won't happen.
I'm hoping for the best for the people who this phone applies to.

Firmware branded cell phones have been very common with plenty of smart phones as well as the older 1G cellulars. That problem will never truly go away NEVER!
