I switched to western, that worked.

Happens with letters like ä, ö, ü and å occasionally. And no, it doesn't happen with just Firefox either.

Commenting more on the technical side, the page encoding can be set on the server-side. Most likely it's set to ISO-8859-1 (Western), since that's historically what most English-language defaults to.

Regarding UTF-8, it's the 'new standard', since it offers more flexibility in terms of supporting a wide range of characters, but it depends on the computer having the necessary fonts that have all right characters (eg. ü).
