Cielo celebrates 4 years in New York’s fashionable Meat Packing District. In the course of its rise to acclaim, Cielo has defined itself as an internationally renowned dance music nightclub brand and has upheld its edict of world-class music, professional service and all-inclusive atmosphere. The club will continue to expound quality music in take-out proportions with the release of Cielo’s third compilation “Seventh Heaven” (2xCD) mixed by residents Nicolas Matar and Willie Graff out in April 2007.

Co-owner and resident DJ Nicolas Matar imparts the prevailing wisdom about the club, “we’ve put so much energy and consideration into Cielo as a nightclub and it’s rewarding to see the club’s vision flourish in NYC nightlife. The strength of the DJ residencies give us a great consistency and the constant influx of guest DJs keep it fresh and exciting for all dance music lovers. ”

When Cielo first emerged in the Meat Packing District back in 2002, it was truly a pioneer in the area when the streets were just a shell of the fashion, restaurant and nightlife destination it has become today. The club was launched as a music-driven venue for mature clubbers and over time, Cielo has successfully morphed into the undisputed best dance music nightclub in New York City. The simple, yet powerful formula can be traced to the single-room layout of the club and sunken dancefloor which provides a powerful immediacy between the DJ and the crowd. This combined with inventive marketing and programming and the strength of Francois K’s award winning Deep Space Mondays, GRAMMY winner Louie Vega’s spiritual Roots Wednesdays with Kevin Hedge ,Nicolas Matar’s Paradizo Saturday residency, Willie Graff’s Heaven Friday residency and the new avant-garde techno monthly Robots parties have garnered critical acclaim. Other stand-out residencies include monthly parties; Tedd Patterson’s Vibal, Master Class with Junior Vasquez, Fresh Fruit with Steve Travolta & Friends, and quarterly parties; Chus & Ceballos’ Stereo Night and Roger Sanchez’ Secret Soul Sessions. Matar - who oversees all the music programming - says “We continually strive to create an educational musical sphere of influence in NYC.” Over the years, a rotating cadre of the world’s most respected and sought after DJs including Ben Watt, Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish, Derrick Carter, Gilles Pettersen, Miguel Migs, Richie Hawtin, Sasha, and new bourgeoning artists like Matthew Dear, Trentemoller, and Behrouz have designated the club as an international dance music destination for DJs and music lovers alike.

“People can come to Cielo on any day of the week and experience quality music with an eclectic crowd and through it all we have been able to maintain an underground, vibrant and chic vibe.” Matar derides the mass manufacturing of today’s nightclubs by countering with a more egalitarian spin, “We eschew the elitist attitudes of upscale lounges and separate VIP areas and instead provide a cohesive, immediate relationship with the DJ, music and the people with our classical layout inspired by the amphitheaters of ancient Greece and the old school discotheques from the 70s.”

The beautifully designed club features a world-class, state-of-the-art digital Funktion One soundsystem, designed like a music studio with unparalleled acoustics making it very appealing for the world’s DJs with constant upgrades throughout the year. The timeless modern 70s décor is accented by the signature log-cabin lights engulfing the entire room. In order to accommodate technological advances and new DJ gadgetry, the DJ booth underwent a facelift for 2007 and the outdoor-heated terrace features new landscaping. Over the years, Cielo has continued to triumph and collect accolades including “Best Nightclub” by Village Voice[/b] 2006,“Best Deep House Club” by New York Magazine in 2006, "Best Club" and "Best Resident DJ - Francois K.” by Club World Awards 2005 & 2006, “Best Venue USA” by URB Magazine 2005 and “Best Club” by Dancestar Awards USA 2004. Cielo is the only North American Venue to be nominated at the House Music Awards in 2005 & 2006 and was included in the Top 50 Nightclubs in the World 2006 in DJ Magazine.

I still find Cielo to be the best club in NYC that I've been to. The sound is amazing and the vibe is usually great, especially for the Thursday parties they've had over the years (East Side Productions stuff a few years back, Robots now, etc.). Even the suits are usually having fun (or leave soon). Less crackie than Love with equivalent sound and better lighting.

It's no wonder huge name DJs, like Sasha, Howells, Burridge, Holden, and many more play there, even though they obviously have to take a pay cut to play in such a small club.
