Buy the clutch kit online/ebay. Save tons that way. Especially with the current exchange rate. Specifiy to ship the package via USPS and not UPS/FedEx because of the high brokerage fees.
I know a good mechanic, he is at Kipling/Queensway near Ikea. Let me know if you need the coordinates. |

AutoMotion in Bramptoon, ask for Phil Assad.
They do good work, and know VW/Audi quite well (they built a 4wd Golf II rallycar) |

A clutch job is pretty involved but I dont think it should cost you more then $700 in labor. I dont know how big of a pain the Jettas are so the rate does depend on the car. I know a dude in Buffalo that will hook you up cheaper then anywhere but sometimes he takes longer then expected. |

When I did clutch jobs on my 1990 Miata, and on my 83 GTi, I always found it easier to just take the whole engine/tranny combo out together.
Then again, I was working in my driveway and not in a proper shop.
Your labour estimate seems about right though.
The original quote was a ripoff for sure.
jonnystel: What makes you think it's the clutch? Grinding between gears of is it not gripping and you're losing drive (revs spin up quickly but car doesn't accelerate like it should)?
If it's just shifting poorly, but otherwise stays engaged, it could be something more simple like a master/slave cylinder or just dirty hydraulic fluid. |
