Well bungee jumping without a cord is not bungee jumping. That's just committing suicide.

I think there is a clear difference between your example and what happened. When people drink water, it isn't apparently obvious that too much is lethal. This kind of contest ENCOURAGED people to drink too much, without much regard for the danger of water intoxication.

It's the same with alcohol drinking contests. It encourages alcohol poisoning.

People are competitive. People are dumb. When you put the two together, you get people dying. If I was trying to win something, the thought of drinking too much water probably wouldn't have crossed my mind either. Who conciously thinks of water as being a lethal substance when ingested?

Not knowing that drinking too much water will kill you is quite akin to not knowing that bungee jumping without a cord will kill you. It's common ing knowledge that you can get water poisoning from drinking too much - it's obvious as by the time your stomach fills up and you can feel that you've pushed yourself too far. Are you trying to say that she probably didn't have any warning signs when she downed her 2nd gallon? She didn't feel as though something was wrong before it was time for her to stop?

My only sympathies go out to her children, who are left motherless because their mother was a ing idiot who indulged in the destructive waste of a disgusting volume of water. She made her own choices, regardless of whether or not a radio station of all things encouraged her to.

If there's any "authority" to blame here (besides the woman who took it upon herself to commit hydro-suicide) it's the ed up overindulgence of our bourgeoisie western society that allows for people to so gluttonously indulge themselves in drinking too much water for recreational purposes. And even that's not very convincing.
