who is second sun?
First, Second Sun conquered the trance world with their hit collaboration with Paul Van Dyk, "Crush" (3 singles on his label - "Empire", "The Spell" and "Playground" helped solidify their rep, with spins from the worlds top DJs and spots on countless compilations). Then, they hit the house scene in a major way: one the biggest tracks of Miami's WMC 2006 with their remix of Queens Another one Bites the Dust (soon to be released on top dance label Positiva/EMI Records), plus vocals & remixes for Deep Dish's Party all the time & Sander Kleinenberg. Spins from the biggest house DJs, including regular plays on Pete Tong's "Essential Selection" on BBC Radio 1, helped audiences worldwide realize how versatile these Miami-based boys really are. Now, they have affected the dance scene in a new way: with their mind-blowing live show! Unprecedented stage presence, live keyboards an especially Antoine's live vocals have made Second Sun America's hottest live dance act, bringing an almost rock-show-like feel to packed clubs and festivals. No wonder URB magazine has dubbed the duo clubland's newest superstars.

Hailing from South Beach, Second Sun are all about the party. The producing/DJing/performing duo of Antoine Toupin and Adam Cavaluzi (transplants from Montreal) mix live vocals and keyboards with electronic elements (programmed drums, samples) in a rock band-like approach to progressive, house and trance.

In a short time, theyve worked with Paul Van Dyk, remixed Queen and TV on the Radio and put out a number of clubland hits (like Empire, The Spell and Playground). Now theyre about to party in Detroit for the first time. We asked Antoine for a preview.

Real Detroit: What originally turned you on to party music?
Antoine Toupin: When I started going to some of the first Montreal raves when I was 13. From my first one I was hooked!

RD: Your live show has a rock n roll feel is rock a heavy influence in your music?
AT: Definitely. Ive been playing guitar since I was 7 and I was always in different rock bands growing up. Adam also used to be a drummer so once in a while, we get our instruments and rock out! There came a point when I was a teenager where I was so into dance music that I didnt feel motivated by playing in rock bands, so I just naturally gravitated towards learning how to produce dance. It was only later that I realized that I could incorporate elements of rock in the electronic music we were making even for live shows.

RD: So rock influenced your idea to perform with live vocals and keyboards?
AT: Absolutely! When we were playing in bands we would write songs and then perform them in front of a crowd. We thought, Why would this have to be different for dance music? Were not DJs and we felt we didnt need to be in order to share this music live with a crowd. It took a few years to figure out how to do it with electronic music but in the end it was worth it. The technology we have now enables us to really have fun at the shows and not be worried about machines not working.

RD: Has living in Miami influenced you?
AT: Im sure it has to some extent. This city is obviously very party-oriented. The result of that is that people think, If it makes me dance, its good. So the fact that the DJ is a big name or not doesnt really matter as much as if he makes the people dance. When youre locked in a studio for 12 hours, youre not necessarily in a party mood, so some producers have a tendency to over-produce and forget that they are making DANCE MUSIC! I think the Miami vibe has helped us in that sense. Sometimes after long nights at the studio, we would head over to the outdoor terrace of club Space on Sunday mornings to get a direct reaction to a new track or remix we were working on. Its an instant way to see if the track works or not.

RD: What are your thoughts about the Detroit electronic scene?
AT: Itll be our first time in Detroit so were looking forward to seeing how things are out there. I remember the days when I used to be obsessed with Detroit techno. Its definitely a key city in the evolution of dance music so Im curious to see how the scene is nowadays.

RD: What should fans expect at your Detroit show?
AT: An electronic live show full of energy, live vocals and flying unicorns that shoot lasers out of their eyes ... OK scratch that last one. See you at the party! | RDW
