Trance Vs Techno

Ok ive been getting into a bit of an argument with techno fans on another forum. Basically a couple of them are elitists and hate trance and so on, But then they went to say that trance is similar to techno only it has ups and downs... Are they talking about dirty detroit techno where nothing ever builds up or breaks down??? Is this the only difference between techno and trance?> Because what would be the point of listening to music where basically nothing ever climaxes etc.

music doesnt always need build ups and breakdowns. just enjoy it, its only music.

My opinion, listen to what you want and go from there. I was die hard trance a year ago and now I'm listening to that would most likely make blood squirt out the corners of your eye sockets. Enjoy the ride.

well in loads of rock/r&b/soul/rap/pop songs nothing ever climaxes and people still listen to them

and they probably hate only modern trance...

I don't agree. In rock/r&b/soul/rap/pop you generally have a vocal chorus, which you could easily call a climax (though a repeated one, but none the less).

For a good while techno and trance sounded very much alike.

Trance in its beginnings was instrumentally what happened when you combined acid house with techno. In this sense, trance sounded a lot like techno, the only main difference, as your friends said, is that trance built up energy over extended periods.
DJ Shibby
trance is strongly melody driven in an almost classical style

I always find it best not to get too bothered by the boundaries of genre names. Some trance doesnt climax much, it plods along, and floats along, and then finishes. Some techno reaches a peak after the breakdown.... To say theres no point in listening to something because it doesnt peak is a bit extreme perhaps. But i do kinda see where you're coming from. There will always be arguments over wether trance or techno is better..... Im so glad they crossed over and became tech trance! Now we have the best of both worlds eh?
