Hi guys!
The other other night I had the most amazing time messing around with Discogs, Ishkur's guide to EDM, and Juno, Discovering new music (not really new music but stuff that I have heard in the past and didnt know of their genres)
I am now extremely interested in the following genres: 'Psychedelia', '2-Step', 'Shogazing', 'Illbient', 'Ambient Trance'.
I was wondering if you guys might be able to join in and help me with the following inquiries:
-What sort of sounds define the music in these genres?
-Is there an artist/s that focuses on non-vocal 2 step and either that or melodic vocals instead of rap?
-What's the difference between llbient and ambient?
-Is there by any chance a 'Pyschedelia' album full of tracks like "Neu! - Hallagallo"?
and finally, does anybody know the scorn track that amy_m is referring to in this thread:

???
Thank you and I hope to learn more about these really cool genres :)
P.S
I'm also into the acid sound but I prefer it when the cut filter is kept low as I dont like all of those high rezzy watery acid sounds. Do you guys know of any artists that prefer to keep the cut low in their acid music?
Thanks again :) |

First and most important, always see the irony in Ishkur's Guide, read the disclaimer and you'll see that many things presented in the guide are made up for entertainment.
I don't think Psychedelia is a real music genre, the word means experiencing something intense/wierd with all of your senses, or the guide is refering to Psychedelic Trance wich is a big easier to explain (why not wikipedia it)...
Illbient i know is a real music genre, it's the darker side of Ambient, presenting dark soundscapes ect.
But i dunno if people use the 'Ambient Trance' definition anymore...
Long time ago it was popular to make chilled versions of your otherwise standard trance music, hence the name 'Ambient Trance'. But most of the tracks were not very much 'Ambient' anyway, so i dunno if there's such a genre.
But remember, the Guide is supposed to make fun of things like these, and if you understand the type of humor it's very entertaining. |

Usually the music refered to with "ambient trance" sounds like neither ambient nor trance. However, i think music like much of the stuff released on Ultimae Records fits the description, maybe "trance ambient" rather than "ambient trance". :) |

No dude. Look under the downtempo section. Psy-trance isn't the only "psychedelic" genre out there, man.
I think Can qualifies: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Can
Experimental band, their songs are often long jam sessions it seems like. |

No not 2 step or UK Garage (as it's sometimes called)! It's the devils music!
It's a dead scene in the UK and has evolved into other things. I can remember the Artists but all the 2 step tracks I remember had vocals if you could call them that it was more like listening to a howling banshee. |

Shoe-gazing is a genre of rock music most active in the late 1980s, at least here in the UK. It was largely killed off by the advent of Britpop. I don't know much about it, but my perception has always been that it's quite psychedelic, heavily-produced and self-indulgent. Of course, you could just read the Wikipedia article on it.
As for ambient trance, you do get a lot of "Chillout" mixes of trance, which largely consist of cutting out all the percussion and bass, emphasising the melodic side and restructuring the track somewhat so it still makes sense without the dancefloor elements. This compilation is a perfect example.
Other than that, there are a lot of producers who do make tracks specifically as ambient excursions (as opposed to simply remixing existing trance tracks), although I can't really think of any artists who make a living from it. One of the best examples I can give is Sven Vath's stuff from the early 90s, where his albums featured quite a few ambient pieces with a lot of sounds and elements common with trance from the era. I think Oliver Lieb has done similar things under his LSG alias too. |

You should check out the Steve Roach album "Proof Positive", you'll understand why once you hear it. |
