Flight advice

Does anyone know when the best time of year to take a flight to Australia is?

A friend of mine is moving there for a while and has invited me to come and stay with her.

This means all I have to pay for is the flight ticket (and spending money), but flight tickets alone are $1000 - $1500+!!

Anyway, I have never been to Australia, and in fact have only been on one flight (two if you count the return flight), so I don't know much about good flying times, or even good airlines for that matter.

Anyone have any advice? Any cheap ticket sites? Any airlines to avoid? What time is best to go (cheapest)?

avoid holidays and busy periods mostly.

Cheapest times are may and october.

Airlines to that part of the world tend to all be fairly good so nothing to point out.

For sites just look at the usual ones.
If you are really interested in striking a bargain you need to realize prices fluctuate daily and you can read up more on the subject here To buy or not to buy: Mining airline fare data to minimize ticket purchase price research paper ( pdf )

Jetstar is the low-cost subsidiary of QANTAS, the national airline in Australia. Check out the website to see if you can get any good deals.

Jetstar has just started flying international, and one of the places
that it now flies to is Honolulu. If you can find a cheap flight to
Hawaii, then you might be able to get a cheap Jetstar flight into
Australia as well.

Qantas has just started flying nonstop into Canada, but i have NFI
how much it costs. My dad works for Qantas so its very cheap for
me to fly :p

The cheapest airline would probably end up beind Emirates or
Malaysian or something....you need to find the website where you
can compare airline ticket prices. I can't remember the name,
unfortunately :D

You have to go to Bangkok, and than find a low cost flight ticket to Australia by searching for the best in skylow (www.skylow.com).

Airlines tend to have the best prices to Australia in May and sometimes August.

Keep in mind though that a fair price for a roundtrip from the eastern or central part of North America to Australia will be about $1200-$1500 US. The flights are that expensive mainly due to fuel costs. The west coast of the US to Sydney is the longest regular non-stop flight in the world and aviation fuel is not cheap.

United had a short notice deal when I went, and it cost me $900 round trip from Chicago in May 2004. The cheapest I ever saw was $650 in August of that year, but those kind of deals you are forced to fly specific dates each way, and they are only sold the week before.

The last few times I have checked prices have been pretty standard at $1000 for the "deal" flights as airfares have risen a lot.

You are also looking at a very very long day in airplanes/airports. 3-4 hours to the west coast airport, then 13-14 hours over the Ocean.

If you go direct from NA to Oz, you only have 2 options, United and Qantas. Both are good airlines.

My biggest piece of advice is this: get an aisle seat. The 747 is a pretty comfy plane, but having an aisle seat gives you the freedom to move around and stretch your legs or go to the bathroom. There isn't jack to see between the first and last 15 minutes of your flight except water so the window is not worth the hassle of having to climb over 2 people to get to the aisle.

if oyu can find a cheap flight to hongkong or bangkok or kuala lumpur you can get really cheap flights to oz. but dont fly out of canada.... airport taxes FTL

So you think I should fly from Boston to an Asian airport, and then get a whole seperate flight to Australia?

Wouldn't that total up to a higher amount?

EDIT:

For example:

Flight from Boston to Hong Kong = $1120
Flight from Hong Kong to Sydney = $925

Almost $2000 whereas a straight flight out of Toronto to Australia can be as low as $1200...?
