mixtape bust

So 'DJ Drama', a rapper/mixtape producer has been jailed for his illegal mixtapes care of RIAA's efforts. What does this mean about the livesets we know and love? The general opinion is that pirating music is a crime, but listening to livesets is the work of a specific DJ even if it includes copyright material that the dj doesn't have broadcast rights for. Historically I guess RIAA has seen things like this as a positive thing that helps increase the popularity of artists and so on. Given, we don't pay money for livesets, but we are the consumers. Are they now considering possessing livesets the same thing as having pirated mp3s?
Would TA be at risk, considering it hosts/supplies livesets?

This could signal a coming change of heart with the RIAA.

I read about this. And ya know what, it's something that happened that will catch more publicity then it should and make a small stir and then it will pass over before it happens again. I wouldn't let something like this scare millions of people around the world but hey, you definitely could be the one with luck that day that does get busted.

There have been mixtape busts before: in 2005, five employees of Mondo Kim’s, in the East Village in New York, were jailed after the store was found to be selling unlicensed mixtapes.

Same situation as those people on eBay who sell ASOT. We all wish they were caught for it. You cant SELL livesets, which these are similar too. Now again its the RIAA going berserk and not moving with the times, but lets face it if a shop was selling broadcasts of ASOT or livesets then this place would be up in arms.

Why not? You can sell anything you own, in this case cds i guess.

That's exactly why - you do not own the rights to sell these tapes. You can only have them for your own personal use.

That's what the government says.

And thats why it's illegal. I don't see how you could argue with that.

No one was talking about what's legal or not. The question was wheter one has the right to sell the stuff mentioned or not. Legal and moral are two separate things. The law doesn't define or give us rights, it can only negate those we already have.

these guys were selling 80,000+ copies and had a HUGE duplication operation going on in their place.

a far cry from someone selling 50 copies of ASOT on ebay

So... basically you're all for no laws whatsoever, right?

Only private laws that don't violate private property rights. I'm against arbitrary public legislation.

The appropriate analogy would be Armin selling ASOT CDs on ebay, since these were mixes by DJ Drama.
