Beat Matching Techniques

There's pretty much a community consensus that the best way to beat match is by ear. I need help regarding exactly how to approach this.

Let's say that a 5 minute tune is spinning on deck A.

I lay my next track out on deck B.

While A plays, what am I doing with B? Cue the first beat, let it play in the headphones to make sure I have the BPM/speed matched? Then go back to the cue point and actually mix it in?

My problem is that, while my ear is decent and I can get the beats together, I don't know how to keep them together when the songs are different speeds and how to change their speeds (during the songs, just test in my headphones or what?)

I don't really understand your question. Do you mean beatmatching on the fly?
