Yes, when we relaunched the GameSpot forums (in 2002? -- our prevoius boards were TERRIBLE and hardly used) I worked with Lithium (who has done forums for the likes of Dell, Nintendo, Sony, Adult Swim,) and a in brainstorming a TON of the ideas you see in their boards today. Although after some time for various reasons we completely re-developed the boards inhouse which allowed us to implement every feature the Lithium-developed boards had and we've gone far beyond that to integrate our boards deeply within Gamespot.
For the first couple of years I adminned the board...basically controlling everything myself and and overlooking a small number of mods. The problem that came about is that I was doing this on top of all my other duties...which caused me to be up to 2am-4am every night making sure people behave, overlooking the upgrades, etc. That's when we decided that we needed to hire a full time admin...in which we hired one of our mods full-time and moved her to SF from th east coast. We believe we have three or four (maybe five or six) full time admins at this point with a godly number of mods. But it's largely because our community has expanded into doing online tournaments and stuff.
Another forum I relaunched was way back in 1998...and it's the Gaming-Age boards. Probably one of the most controversial boards on the net in regards to gaming. It became well respected by the video development, publishing, and media industry back in the day and too an extent is today. It was a board that could easily get out of control but think we kept it well in check when I was heading it up. It grew from nothing to one of the largely VG forums on the net within 18 months before I left in Nov 1999. After I left it got so out of hand though that if you signed up you had to be approved before you were allowed to post. Hasn't been like that for years now, and the community is surely still well respected within the industry, but don't think it is as much as it.
Anyhow, I get sucked into communities far too easily if I am a mod or admin...and I have a ton of responsibilities in my life now and just can't handle it....plus just don't want to deal with it. :)
Want to know something scary? As some may know, I've known Drew (Rukes) longer than anyone else on these boards...by far. How? We actually, in total coincedence, worked on Gaming-Age together. This was way back in 1998. And we both lived on the east coast at the time, albeit I was in Florida and he was in New York. We hadn't talked to each other since probably late 1999 (when I moved to SF and had a total disconnect from the internet for awhile outside of work) when he popped up out of nowhere posting pics of some event on the Spundae board maybe 2 years ago and I noticed the name "Rukes" and then recognized him in some pics...and was WTF!!! What a small world.
OK, enough rambling.... :) |
I asumed you did the Gamespot forums, because your sticky is still in the "system wars" forum, but I never knew you did both the gaming age and gamespot forums, I have been using both of those boards for years.....But does the west coast TA really need a mod?? I can see in a gamespot forum but in TA???its not nearlly as big and most people behave them selfs.. |

Ya, there is relatively little policing needed, but it would be nice to make things sticky etc... faq, yada yada, instead of waiting around for the global mods to do it. |

| i don't think it matters WHO the mod here is, as long as he or she isn't some rigid, humorless with a thirst for power. the main issue is we just need someone who is on here more than once a week or less... |
