How do you get the individual tracks for a remix?

This may be a stupid question, but how do I get say, only the vocals to a popular rap song or only one part of another song (like just the drums) or something like that?

You buy an acappella, or get the separate tracks from the producer.

so when all those different DJ's are remixing the same song they are actually contacting the person who orginially made it to get the tracks?

Yes, typically people will either get asked to do remixes or get the individual tracks some other way, such as if a producer makes them available on his site like Sasha did for Airdrawndagger a while back, or if a label holds a contest to remix a particular track. In some cases a MIDI file will be provided as well.

You've actually got it backwards. Very occasionally a producer might make some samples available, or someone might ask for them and get them, but most of the time it's the original producer or label who finds a couple of people to do the remixes. A single can't go out on vinyl with just one track, they always have several remixes, and those remixes are done before the track is even released. Sometimes there are a few different releases, but it's almost always a collaboration effort with the original producer/labels.

Of course, there's nothing stopping you from contacting the label or producer for samples, but you might not get them. I've always been a little off-put when someone's asked to remix one of my tracks, though not all producers are like that. And there's nothing stopping you from doing a bootleg in that case (except for technological limitations), but if you want to go that route then you're into copyright issues and you therefore won't get help here.

Vocals are a specific case they're the hardest to get, usually for evey other track (at least in trance) you can get midi's which someone will have worked out, hell you could work them out yourelf, then you use those, see the faq for where to get MIDIs.
