Is this possible (music therory question)

I have this question about changing between scales and or progressions just wondering if this is possible and accepted.
for example your in the key of bflat, and using a natural minor scale
with a I ,VI,IV ,V progression.
now your entire song is in that same key then for the second lead
you decide you want to go to a Phrygian scale
in the same key of b-flat but a different progression maybe
I,IV ,V,I
would something like this work? |

| This is entirely possible to do. Being possible, however, does not guarantee that it will sound good. In this instance it shouldn't really be all that difficult considering you are keeping the same key only changing 1 tone. Just make sure that it sounds good to you. |

Interesting to see theory questions on here, that's unusual.
The Phrygian mode is just the major scale starting on the 3rd degree. So I'm not completely sure what you mean by switching to the Phrygian mode, you could be referring to two things:
1. Switching to the phrygian mode of the same scale (Bb major, D phrygian mode). In this case your second chord progression has technically changed to III-VI-VII-III in terms of the original scale. It sounds bizarre to me, but all I can say is try it out and see. I think you could probably make it work with the right harmony, although going from VII to III in the major scale is something that - as far as I know - isn't too common. There's certainly nothing wrong with switching the mode though, that's common.
2. Switching to the Bb phrygian mode, which is the Gb major scale. Again I'll say, you never know until you try, but it's a huge key change so somehow I don't think it would work unless you had a very gradual modulation and/or you're producing jazz.
Does that answer the question? |

I believe he is talking about switching to Bb phrygian. This actually shouldn't be too weird, because the only difference between a Bb natural minor scale and a Bb phrygian scale is a lowered second scale degree. The main problem will be on the V chord. A V with a flat 2 will sound out of place. I believe it would be best to continue using a C for the 5th in the V chord to maintain the same pull towards the root. I would only use the Cb (or B natural, however you want to say it) as a non-chord tone. Using it in the actual chord would sound out of place and dissonant. Just my two cents though. Do what you think sounds best. |

so have you tried to do what you described? if you answered yes, did it sound good?
we may have solved the mystery! |

I've never really understood questions like this.
Try it. If it sounds like ass, dump it. If not, go for it. All that matters is how the end-product sounds. :) |

It's spam, dude. They turned off approval for new members so we're getting some bots. Probably should have a Captcha or something... but anyway, don't bother replying or commenting, eventually the mods will find the posts and delete them. So it's better to just pretend they don't exist - don't scratch the flame itch because that only helps them. |
