Trying to decide on which pair of decent professional studio monitors to buy that you guys might recommend, that could handle highly bassy music, particularly trance (not looking for the best in the west, but something very decent for its price range of say around 300 bucks for 2). I will also be using these monitors for DJing at home, so need something that can handle hours of mixing as well. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

You asked a question that gets answered on here 24x7. SEARCH.
Use your common sense and don't be lazy.
Also, I'll tell you now, it's not even worth asking this question. There are two reasons why this is so:
1. It's not what you use it's how you use it - BT, Jonas Steur, many other producers use absolute crap monitors.
2. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - The best monitors are the ones you think are best.
Good luck :) |

But if you do go for monitors try your best to listen and stretch to Genelecs 8020A's.

sometimes its better to have/work on mediocre monitors because the audience listening to the mp3 at home wont have the top notch monitors anyways just a simple computer speaker set up 99.9% of the time. |

Do you want to limit yourself to the home user with crap speakers though? Or do you want to build tracks that will sound good in a club with an amazing system? Gotta consider all potential listening conditions and your target audience IMO. |

Not true :P
You want the best, to your ears, you can afford for monitoring. BUT, yes, it is a good idea to have a set of hifi speakers to A/B your mixes on.

I'd just hit up some speaker shops, guitar centers, etc...and listen to some monitors. Bring a CD with music similar to what you'd be producing. It's all personal preference.
-shameless plug- Then when you've decided what you want, send me a PM, I can usually beat their prices by a significant margin. :D |

300 dollars isn't enough for a pair of speakers, in fact I don't think it's enough for even one monitor speaker. Save up a lot more, and you won't regret it. |

Could not have said it better myself.
Mackie HR824 = $630 each
Go to guitar center, bring cash, you will get a pair for $1100. Just gotta bargain with them. Floor demos might cost $800 - $1000.
You should also demo M-Audio BX8A = $500 pair. Give them $450 in cash, theyll take it. I had a chance to listen to those, i was surprised how nice and bassy they sounded. The highgs were not very pronounced but smooth, so if you are going to be producing on those, listen to music on those a lot, so you dont produce tracks that are waay too shrill and got no bass.
Another one to consider is KRK V Series-2 line of speakers. Be careful with Rookit series, since theyre cheaper, but they dont sound very good.
And whatever you do, stay away from Behringer brand. |

Yeah but this is dance music where its going to be heard in a club on a massive soundsystem with enough bass to knock walls down. So if your monitors have very poor bass extension then you can make all kinds of mistakes and never know it until your tune is booming out at 95dB+ and it all sounds horrible :(
But echosystem is right - you do want to listen to your mixes on the worst hifi you have in your house and the weakest earbud headphones. Because they will sound totally different and you notice different things about your tracks. |

Here is the most you will get for your money, and your mixes should have no problems translating to the club? I have a set myself; and much more expensive monitors and hi fi speakers. Nothing else can touch these for full range monitoring under $500. END OF THREAD Blue Sky Media Desk 2.1 |
