M-Audio Audiophile 2496 Vs. EM-U 0404 PCI

Hi all,
Was recently thinking about investing in a production PC.
PC is along the lines of 2gb DDR2 RAM, Pentium Dual Core 3 Ghz.
In your experience what hardware performs better out of the abovementioned two?
Do note: I intend to eventually produce tribal/techno.
Can these PCI interfaces handle this requirement?
Or would it be better to comprimise PC specs and invest in a better soundcard? If so, pl. advise alternate models.
Thanks! |

| of those 2, i would take the emu since it has 1/4" outputs for active monitors. the audiophile 192 from m-audio would be more comparable to that than the 2496. it's really a coin flip between the 0404 and 192, though. they both offer the same features and are pretty much the same quality cards. price would be the judge of that... |

Except that the E-MU 0404 has a DSP.
Go for the E-MU 0404. |

| I'm happy with the quality m-audio provides. Never had any serious problems with it. (in contrast to my terratec dmx 6 fire card) |

| Can you recommend a mixer for use with 192 if all I do is VST? |

If all you use are VST instruments, don't waste your time with a mixer. You'll just degrade the signal unless you're working with some insanely good outboard gear. It would be silly to buy a behringer or a mackie. Invest the money into an old powercore or UAD-1 card.
Varun - I'd personally go with the EMU card. Both should be fine. |

In fact, the biggest problem I have is that I even cant plug my headphones :) Audiophile 192 has 2 outputs, 1/4" TRS right and left each..
So I was thinking about buying headphone amp or a mixer.. |

| Wouldn't you still need to amp the signal going to the headphones even if you do have the right cable. |

Yes, since
| quote: | | Output signal is strictly assigned to the first MME device and is designed for connecting mixing consoles, headphones amplifiers, and recording devices. Its volume is fixed at maximum and cannot be changed. |
So I'm asking for a mixer/amp advice :) |

What are you going to be doing exactly Yaroslav?
1. If you're not going to be recording anything
2. You're not even going out to monitors and you'll just be using headphones
Just install ASIO4ALL and use your basic PC soundcard. It's free.
What are you goals? |
