We had a thread in our local forum about Q Magazine releasing their top 20 tunes of the last 20 years recently, and needless to say, the results were questionable at best. Their results:
1. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Nirvana, 1991
2. "Hey Ya!" OutKast, 2003
3. "Sweet Child O' Mine" Guns N' Roses, 1987
4. "Unfinished Symphony" Massive Attack, 1991
5. "One" U2, 1991
6. "Live Forever" Oasis, 1994
7. "Bitter Sweet Symphony" The Verve, 1997
8. "Common People" Pulp, 1995
9. "There She Goes" The LA's, 1990
10. "7 Nation Army" The White Stripes, 2003
11. "Song 2" Blur, 1997
12. "Crazy" Gnarls Barkley, 2006
13. "Angels" Robbie Williams, 1997
14. " . Baby One More Time" Britney Spears, 1999
15. "Personal Jesus" Depeche Mode, 1990
16. "Like A Prayer" Madonna, 1989
17. "Firestarter" The Prodigy, 1997
18. "Brimful of Asha" Cornershop, 1997
19. "Stan" Eminem, 2000
20. "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" Arctic Monkeys, 2006
Sketchy, huh?
In any event, myself and a couple other MWTA's were inspired to write our own, and since I already did it once, I figured I'd share it here too and encourage you all to share your own.
Mine are in no order, the numbers were solely for me to remember how many I had picked. Picking 20 was hard enough, ranking them would have been impossible:
20. Blur - Mellow Song
19. Beastie Boys - Get it Together
18. Gang Starr - Work
17. Medeski, Martin, & Wood - Partido Alto
16. Phish - Born Under Punches (Talking Heads Cover)
15. Black Star - Thieves in the Night
14. Beastie Boys - Super Disco Breakin'
13. Phish - You Enjoy Myself
12. Stardust - The Music Sounds Better With You
11. Starkid - Crayons
10. Pearl Jam - Daughter
09. Nirvana - The Man Who Sold the World (Bowie Cover)
08. OutKast - Elevators
07. The Talking Heads - Take me to the River*
06. Parliament - Bop Gun (Endangered Species)
05. Ice Cube - It was a Good Day
04. Nirvana - Plateau (Meat Puppets Cover)
03. A Tribe Called Quest - Bustas Lament
02. Talib Kweli - Good Mourning
01. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under the Bridge

Blur - Song 2, RHCP - Under The Bridge, Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (and by teen spirit i mean rob's stanky sack :wtf: ), 2Pac & Dre - Cali. Love, System of a Down - Chop Suey, Dre & Snoop - Nuthin But A G Thang (Babe-eh), Lonestar - Amazed (yeah shut up you all know the lyrics), Guns'n'Roses - Sweet Child Of Mine (or even Cold November Rain), Smashing Pumpkins - 1979, Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun, REM - Losing My Religion , The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony... god my brain hurts, but if we're going the non-EDM route, there is sooooo much good over the past 20 years i don't even know where to begin.
one more- Hootie & The Goldfish - Time. |

| Actually, as a Top 20 of pop tracks from the past two decades, that ain't half bad. You can't expect them to be able to consider every scene genre, important record and underappreciated gem in all that time and expect to do it well in 20 tracks, so sticking to the well-knowns is all they can do really. |

agree. there's just too much good . and reall "top whatever" lists are stupid. i never really understood the concept where there are sooo many good songs. i have a top played list and that usually changes every month. there are songs that i will hate for like a year and then bring back into my rotation after that.
charts for the lose. |

What the heck is the big deal about Arctic Monkeys?
They sound totally unremarkable to me. |

Many of them, yes.
But who doesn't like a game of "Desert Island Discs" (or some variation thereof) occasionally to pass the time? Definitely gives an interesting glimpse into others lives... :) |

| well i'm just saying you can do like a monthly chart. but there's way too many tunes over the past 20 years, i was gonna do it and got confused just from '87 - '94. |

Indeed. Their influence on my life is immeasurable.
The list is clearly my own - and is in no way supposed to be indicative of some sort of universal "Top 20 of the last 20" list. |
