EM format hasn't changed. Whats changed is people's perceptions of it.
In the 90's it was one of the best resources for any EDM fan to tune into a wide range of music. Nowadays there is 1000's of internet radio stations to cater to everyones tastes.
All the top DJs played EM's through the 90s. So much so that in the 00's it became the "big break" to get the invitation to do an EM. It became the "look how far i've come, i've got an EM"
Thats still the case in theory. As for me, the format hasn't changed. The major jocks get regular shows, with some random 'hot' talent invited on in between.
@ topic starter, if the EM is concerning you about not inviting enough trance DJs, perhaps its for a reason. There are no stand-out DJs or styles or mixes out there, for trance at the moment. The dominance of house, tech-house and minimal as the current "cool" word obviously means that there will be more shows focused on this current trend.
Perhaps the biggest difference to EM is that in 1990's it was seen as a trendsetter. Now its just a trendfollower, like the other 999 radio shows out there. |

It's good that the essential mix doesn't host that bullcrap anymore, I hope it's intentional and that they're trying to send a message, trance cant evolve at .000001% the pace the rest of EDM does and still be considered a respectable genre, despite the 900 kabillion trance-heads worldwide.
Good on you essential mix, keep Armin and those other jesus' second coming dj's off the damn show! |

ever considered topping yourself? I'm sure we could get enough people to donate because you're pretty pathetic. Trance has evolved in some cases, and it's not being shown much so all you ignorant house-s think is trance is whatever armin pvd tiesto or schulz are playing. That's as much ignorance as you'll ever see. Then again I wouldn't expect different for someone who's neither french nor canadian. |

Askew is 1 of the 'few' (rhyme again :p) who can surprise me currently on the trance-genre. i was a 'die-hard' trance-listener, but for 1 or 2 yrs now, ive lost my interest. but when i hear a set of him occasionally, he can amaze me most of the times .. looking forward to his EM :)
btw, is there a schedule available of (all) the EM's to come? |

the essential mix has become a bit boring, mostly because of all the dj's that goes on it and plays a set like any other set.
i mean in the past there have been alot of emixes that have been something out of the ordinary, like in 98 where ashley beedle who was making a big name of himself playing mostly house drops a set filled with just ska, reggae, dancehall & lovers rock.
same year, air sends a set (well, they were two). with alot of different type of music, ranging from like sly stone, thomas bangalter,the beatles,chateau flight,money mark,snoop dogg,horace andy etc etc.
in 94,95,96 Snap! provided em's with mainly trance in them, it was little to none mixing going on but stellar tracklists
1997 Scott hardkiss provided a mix with everything from deep house, funky house, breaks, trance, progressive house and even some temptations to end it all
or 1994 when leftfield sent a two hour mix filled with dub,downtempo beats, breaks, hiphop, techno, house
and what do we get in 2007, people like Gabriel Ananda & Seamus Haji playing the same ol . |
