Rewiring Reason and Ableton - plus MIDI

I have Ableton 6.0 and Reason 3.0. I have been using Ableton as my sequencer, rewired to Reason of course. I usually just wire up the devices in Reason to different inputs on the hardware interface, then I create a equivalent track in ableton. Select the Reason input, etc, you know the drill.

What I have been doing however, is creating any MIDI sequences in the Reason sequencer, and then just recording the audio output as audio clips within Ableton. I actually didn't realize you could send MIDI directly from Ableton to Reason over Rewire until recently (duh).

So I assume you have to create one MIDI track in Ableton, and select the MIDI to be sent to Reason, and then another track in Ableton for the audio coming back in from Reason?

When you go to sequence the track, do you then have to record audio clips in Ableton off the return audio track? Or is the MIDI clip enough? That's the part I'm stuck on :)

yes, the return audio track in ableton will need to be selected as "INPUT"(turns orange) and then hit record :) i do the same thing with drumcore...

Unless I'm misunderstanding something, no you DONT need to record the audio into ableton. Just set up one midi channel with its output set to whichever reason device you want to control. Then one audio track set to receive audio from Reason with the correct audio channels. It will need to be set to input (orange) as the other chap said, but I never hit record. Why bother? It will play the sound and whatever automation you have from the midi so why record it to audio? No need to.

Even when you render to disk, it will still include all the sound from Reason.

Aha, the rendering part was what I was wondering about... that's cool, one less step.
