Question from a Reason n00b

I have no hardware but I have Reason and Cubase. I would like to start out using samples and experiment with them to make something new, and in time hopefully be able to create my own. I'm wanting to change the pitch, length, and whatever else those 2 programs are capable of.

I've literally spent hours trying to play around with Reason and I got the drums down. But there are some pads, etc that I want to change around and can't make any sense of Reason's sequencer at the bottom. I'm VERY used to Acid Pro so I'm trying to apply that knowledge to this b/c it looks somewhat similar.

Are there any basic tips/tutorials on how to edit samples in Reason?

your better editing samples in cubase and rewire reason.

in reason though i think its the nn-xt lets you use samples.

Yes the NN-Xt is a virtual sampler and I beleive Reason contains another v-sampler called NN19.
You can load basically any format of audio(sample) into it and assign them to note/keys accordingly! You can also edit the samples using these 2 devices. If your just starting out like me Reason is your best bet. Stay Away form CUBASE for a while. Unless you want to record lengthy vocal or other instrument tracks Reason will suffice and is very simple to use and learn. If you follow the links privided in this forum or go directly to "Computer Music" magazines web site they have links for many tutorials that use Reason. One imparticular in The Trance Master Class that has 3 parts and contain the files you need!!!. Reason also has a loop player called Dr.Rex that has slicing capabilites too (I think).

Good luck!

Its quite simple really, you must Rewire Cubase and Reason.

If you want to use one shot samples or short samples and quickly get a grove going, load them into the Reason samplers NN19 or NNXT or the redrum drum machine. If you have Rex2 files use the DR Rex.

For mixing down to audio and to sequence longer pieces of audio use the cubase sequencer and its timestretching and audio functions.
You would find it difficult to sequence with audio loaded into Reason of anything more than a few bars because of the way Reason works. However you dont actually have to use the Reason sequencer at all as you can assign midi tracks to control Reasons samplers in Cubase.

Thanks for all the input!
That Propellerhead page on the NN-19 really helped.

I'm working on a drum n bass track (I can never get the fundamentals of a trance track down, never sounds right) and my wife's friend sings on trip hop but said she'd lend her vocals to the song so I'll post it up when it's done
