ok so i got given some nice vocal mics but i cant plug them into my system. I have never had to plug a mic or anything into my comp before because i just have a USB MIDI controller but now i need to and i dont know how. I dont have the money to buy a full on MIDI interface but i do have a mixer i can run through (my DJ one)(Stanton SA-8) it has RCA and 1/4" inputs on the back. My guess is i need some sort of DI box to run from my mic to my mixer and then run from my mixer into the line in on my comp sound card. I have one right now from work that has the inputs wrong (ie. has a mono 1/4" in and a XLR out. i need a XLR in and a Stereo 1/4" in, i think.) Do i have that right? Can anyone help me out and tell me what i should look at getting or suggest any other stuff that might work?
Thanks

Depends how crap you want it to be, anywhere from $200 to $5,000 i would say.
Audio interface is a soundcard. A proper recording soundcard. A mic preamp boosts the signal from the microphone. :) |

You can find a lot of inexpensive interfaces with mic preamps built into them.

Dude if you dont want to spend alot of money just get this Soundblaster X-fi. As you see its under 200 beans at a local computer shop. It has not bad sound 24bit/96khz and ASIO driver.
The Module you can put in a CDROM Slot to plug in a Mic or Line and Headphones input from the front of your computer.
Most guys here will prob say its not good but its not bad for the money and Its work great for me as Im just a noob too!!!

yeah, its good for the money...but you have to keep in mind that purpose of these cards is gaming...not serious music production...
(comes from someone who used to produce music with an integrated yamaha soundcard now being pretty satisfied with a high-end guillemot audio interface :-) ) |

| I would stick with something you can plug the XLR mic cable right into. Anytime you're fumbling around with converter cables etc, you can be introducing noise and problems. i.e not worth the trouble. |

Dude define serious music production? Maybe I'm wrong but I don't call remixing existing tunes serious! I thought this forum was a place to learn and not start at the top and work your way down!
I agree there are better cards/interfaces but what card or midi./audio interface do you suggest for under $500 that that card(Xfi) will not do for 150$ It has an Audio Creation(ASIO) NOT just for gaming! Unless you got a whole full studio at home or something and you need a 4in / 4out or 8in /8 out card.
Like me I think the guy just wants to mess around. No?
I just seems to me like everyone here just wants to brag about what they got or what they can do but let me know how many people here are getting paid for their so-called productions as you put it then maybe they should buy this guy the gear for $1000 you have already spent for him! lol |

I dont recomend the xfi. There was a post around here some time ago with the ad for that in it, it made me laugh. "extended fidelity, greater than studio quality" Its daft.
If you have as you say "a nice mic" then buy a "nice audio interface" you should be able to get a decent one for under $500. Don't recomend emu or m audio by the way, have a look at motu or yamaha or focusrite maybe? If I had my pick of anything I'd go the Motu traveller, thats probably out of your pice range though. You don't want to spend a mint.
Alternatively, you could take your nice mic back and replace it with a usb mic, and I wouldn't criticize you for that. |

is there no way that i can just take it through my dj mixer and into the line in on my comp? i really dont have a lot of money right now and i already have the mixer |

Ah ok, well that makes slightly more sense. Well, I guess the cheapest way you could possibly do it would be to grab a behringer DI of some shape (i think they're fairly cheap) and run your mic into that (I think you can get one with all the connections yous need) then run out of that into your computer.
I dont think you would get any advantage to running thru the mixer, as I believe the DI should have line out.
You just need to find the right product, but I think in the end you will need an audio interface as well, so maybe it would be cheaper in the long run to just get the interface with the DI built in? What you want is something with xlr in and line out. Do you know if the mic is phantom powered? because that will make a difference too.
EDIT: I had a look on the behringer website, they have a search feature, I imagine you should be able to find what you want there. |
