I agree that technique down the line is a HUGE bonus. Guys who make it to the point of Zabiela and cater to a specific crowd are known just for this. It's their forte.

What super technical DJs are you a fan of (apart from zabs of course)?

i agree on the technique aspect, but to be honest its not the most important thing there is what makes an artist or a dj stand out relies on three major aspect (1) technique i.e mixing skills and flow within track transitions (2) track selection i.e is it dancefloor material regardless who you are i mean zabs is technical mastermind and the best in the game but his music and track selection is defenetly dancefloor material thats another reason why he is where is and not only cuz of his technique. and probably the most important aspect (3) is how to read your crowed remember your not only playing for yourself your playing for the people if you cant tell weather or not your crowed is enjoying it on the dancefloor then there is a major issue..... and it need to be solved and that entail.... comes down to the music you have in your record case.

I'm not actually a fan of Zabiela... I respect him for all the work he's put into the scene and I think he's great and all but I'm not really into the glitchy stuff...

Hmmm which technical DJs do I like... I love the looping D Formation does with his vocals on a seperate CDJ... I like the stuff that is a little more blended into the beat, a little less in your face...

I mean the obvious Sasha reference... the guy's a magician...

Carl Cox is also one of my idols... that guy combines good choons + an incredible technique AND pumps the party up as a performer...

like that really gets me going. I like a DJ who focuses heavily on his crowd and plays stuff that gets everyone moving...

What I have learned is the e music scene to be a bit different from regular DJs.

A regular hiphop or top40 DJ just goes and plays whatever is popular or on the radio. Or for hiphop DJ case, you play the same song for 10 years every night in the club "if you got a 10 dollar bill put your hands up..." lol. Anyways, these DJs are expendible, and the same as any other DJ, only difference some techincally better than the other, but still expendible.

In the e-music scene, at least what it is supposed to be, it is more of an artist approach. I mean you don't book Richie Hawtin at Trance Energy event right? These people are artists, not just DJs. They have a certain style, a certain sound and thats what you get. They make their own tracks on the most part as well. Granted for example, someone like Richie may play more techno oriented tracks (not hard though) at some events over minimal but still along the same lines in terms of style.

If lets say Richie Hawtin or Gabriel Ananda or whoever were booked at Trance Energy or some big trance event, would they play trance just to suit the crowd? Certainly not, becasue they are artists- and this was a mistake by the booking team, event organizers.

Likewise I am sure Circus knows what type of music should be played at their club and what kind their crowd digs. And before anything like mixing skills or whatever, I am sure they will choose the DJ who suits their bill in terms of style. After that it is track selection and technical skills I guess.

Plus, you dont get around by people saying "Wow that guy is technically awesome but uhh his tracks, music and track selection is just ok or not good- but I'll go to see him". But there are DJs, and even big ones that have made it on the opposite scenario, and will continue to do so, as long as technically they are "good enough".
Enjoy
Case in point, Nick Warren.

guys, this preselection is to test both, the track selection and the mixing, but i think that mixing is the most important for this competition. If you cant play 30 minutes without messing up then i dont think you should play at circus period.

Good luck to the rest!!!!!

I think it went well. I never used a rotary mixer so i had one or two mixes to get used to it, but after that i think it went super well.
