Medieval Total war may not run on your laptops. I'd suggest Homeworld.

So... I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for good games that can be played as a team, or against each other on our PC's.

Hehe. I got one of my friends addicted to AoE2 recently. >_>

Both of the games you mentioned fall under real-time strategy games. Real-time strategy games do get immersive and intense.

Some of those suggested are first-person shooters, such as Unreal Tournament and Counter-Strike. The downside to those are that they're much more fast-paced, and you have to have some skill to not get frustrated easily. Playing against computers is certainly an option, as 1v1 (you vs. your roommate) play will get kinda dull.

These are the games that I play with my friends:
Counter-Strike (FPS)
Warcraft III custom maps (RTS) [eg. DoTA, tower defenses, etc.]
AoE2 (RTS)
Starcraft (RTS)
Defcon (pseudo-RTS) (global thermonuclear war, anyone?)

To be honest, I don't think any of those, with the possible exception of Defcon, are what you're really looking for.
