Sword-Wielding S.D. Teen Kills Mom
By Associated Press
Sat Jan 27, 3:05 PM
HURON, S.D. - Police killed a teenager who they said used a sword to kill his mother and injure three other people, including an officer.
Investigators had not determined the motive for the attacks, Chief Doug Schmitt said Friday.
"We don't have any background or any events leading up to the assault this morning that would give any indication of a motive," he said.
Officers called to the family's home Friday found 14-year-old Rebekah Gilchrist with several cuts on her lower arms and hands. The officers then spotted her brother, 16-year-old Josh Gilchrist, swinging a long sword, Schmitt said.
Schmitt said the boy struck one of the officers several times before the others fired several shots, killing him.
Police then found the body of the boy's mother, 49-year-old mom Betty Gilchrist, and an injured foreign exchange student.
Police said the boy's father, Jon Gilchrist, was not home during the attacks in the east-central South Dakota town.
Schmitt said he believes Josh Gilchrist collected swords.
Rebekah Gilchrist was taken to a hospital in Sioux Falls. The exchange student, whose name was not released, and the officer were treated at Huron Regional Medical Center and released, authorities said.
Four officers were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, standard procedure when police fire a gun.

Well I have to admit, it does sound 'interesting' now but probably fatal. |

Well this is likely the craziest thing that's ever happened in that town in the last 50 years. So yeah, I predict a surge in the local samurai/ninja population. |

Hmm, yeah I looked it up on the internet... 'lol I'm surfing!' [/aol off]
Quiet, named after some indians, mostly agricultural, has a lake, winter, kids with sharp objects and naturally at this time of year a young mans mind turns to homicide.
And why not indeed, it's far more interesting than TV! |

I bet the interwebs don't mention that the tap water quality there is horrendous. People commonly refer to it as "urine water" in lieu of how the word "Huron" is pronounced by the denizens of the midwestern United States as well as the quality and taste of the substance. I'd brutally murder people with medieval weapons if I had to drink that water all year round as well.
There must be something in the water. :wtf:

Quite possibly, Adelaide in Australia has the worst mud cunningly disguised as water anywhere on the planet, probably second only to the toilet in 'Trainspotting'. It also has some really nasty homicides too! :nervous:
Actually I'm just wondering why, with whatever repressed maternal instincts I have as to the logic of buying your child a collection of sharp objects which only really have one purpose (for killing people) as theyre generally not the most stable at that age. edit- course the real fun will start when blame starts getting slathered around looking for an excuse as to 'why'
Computer games, Internet, porn, music genre (choose most publically unpopular) and just being on/off meds.
The answer will be most likely (but not publically)-
"Mum was a cretin for buying swords" |

Yeah right. This happened in the US midwest. They will blame music and homosexuals. |
