I have an Mbox1 as my Pro Tools "rig."
I am not a fan of Pro Tools really. Recently Pro Tools (like Cubase) has come around to "instrument tracks."
To be honest though. If you REALLY want a Pro Tools set up, save up your money for a Digi002 Rack.

However if you have a laptop and you want to use Pro Tools while mobile then perhaps a Mbox2 is more up your alley.
I barely touch Pro Tools, I use it when I have to (school projects).
Meh. Just my opinions really.

My question is that is Protools/MBox2 proprietory to each other?
i.e. If I buy an Mbox as an Audio/Midi device am I limited to the Protools s/w line as a DAW and visa versa? |

Is this not a good thing?
This is what has stopped me from using Cubase or Sonar (as a noob)
Just to confusing for me anyways! lol
When I inserted a midi/vst track, I got 2 tracks to deal with?
I presume one midi and then one audio right away. |

thanks for the tip - def. a lot more expensive...
i am cuebase/reason (soon ableton) user - was looking at possibly using pro-tools....to me I am perfectly happy with cuebase to be fair |

It's all about how much money you want to spend. If you want to run protools, the MBox 2 is great. Or, you can even get the Ozone, which is both an audio interface and a MIDI controller. The MBox can be used as an audio interface with other software too...
A Digi 02 rig is great, but a lot of money.. if you're just going to be screwing around, then an MBox is a great place to start with Protools M Powered. After you develop your chops, then you can invest in a better rig :)
It's a lot of money to put on something you might end up hating and not wanting to use... |

Ditto, pro tools is not cool for trance production, I also have an mbox 1, and I never use the software. The new M box 2 pro is a better buy than the 002 I think, you should hae a look, I believe there are three different mboxes now, so look at them all. Above all, beware of digidesign's trickery re number of outputs. My mbox is supposed to have 6. it has two stereo headphone style ones and one pair of line outs on the back. unfortunately they're all mirrors of one another! go figure that! Not much good for Djing really.
If you buy the mbox, you can use the hardware with another software package. If you dont buy the pro tools hardware you cant use protools. It sucks because the protools hardware is quite expensive to say the least. Have a look at the MOTU stuff instead maybe? |

Protools really isn't intended for sequencing and sample creation. It's primary purpose is for audio recording and mixing, which it's superb at. But, they're currently developing it to work better for sequencing by working more like Logic... sometime in the next year or so, you'll see that side of Protools evolve and if you're already a protools user, then you'll be able to capitalize on that. |

Currently I am using a MOTU 2408 MkI. It was very inexpensive (relatively). It is PCI based (Mbox2/002 are firewire) so it has quite the low latency at a buffer of 128 samples.
Of course the bigger the session the more you have to up your buffer, but that is the concequences of using more CPU etc etc.
It is nice how Digidesign hardware can be used with any other DAW software (but when has that ever been an issue.) It is rediculous that Pro Tools can only be used with accompaning Digidesign hardware.
Shop shop shop before you get something new. To be honest, it would be better if you just kept with your Reason/Cubase combo. Nothing is "limiting" you by using your currenty software. Instead of thinking that something new or different is going to "big up your game" just focus obsessively with the tools you have.

right now i have a set-up that is just getting by. I am having no issues with providing vocals for people as well as recording my vocals for my album. Seems to make no difference to those I send it to. From what I understand most producers and getting really shotty vocals sent to them anyways.
My current set up is makeshift and I need more room thus why going to a audio/midi all in one. I want to stick with cuebase because i totally dig the program.
After investigating this issue further it seems as though for now I should just stick with what I am learning...i am cool with that....
I am going to go with the personus firebox: http://www.stevesmusic.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=811

Dont thank me Im just a messenger too! Thank the others on this forum that suggested this unit as well that know way more than me. Besides I just bought the Edirol FA-66 for one reason only. It is a comparable unit (I think) and they had a used one at L&M that was only a few weeks old (apparantly) for less than half the original price. I paid $170 (cdn)!!! Think I did ok so I couldnt refuse.
However Im not to impressed the Axiom 49 I bought for regular price is obviously slightly used too as the contents have all been open. They gonna get a call tomorrow and I want a brand new one in the box or a credit of some sort!!! |

Which renders it nothing more than a glorified tape deck! Sorry, no dice, I found pro tools lovely for laying down a demo, the second I tried to sync anything to a beat, import a loop, even edit really, I had dramas, partly because there is (was?) no built in latency compensation. Midi implementation is shot too. And really you say, its superb at audio recording and mixing, and I agree, but how could it not be! To my mind its incredibly simple, every daw has a mixer and an edit window, its the most basic thing!:D
Anyway, if they get it more like logic (although I like the looks of DP better) then I'll definitely revisit it, but it also desperately needs a better GUI, I know this sounds shallow, but a good GUI makes the difference for me, that and intuitive looping/ time stretch (like ableton live) are real selling points, to me at least. Having everything in one window like live and DP is wonderful for people without multi display systems. When I first got pro tools, I thought I had done something wrong, it was all grey and ugly and clunky (visually and accessibility wise) I hadn't seen anything like it since at least '98! But if pro tools is serving a purpose for you, then go for it, it didn't suit me, but to each his own.
Anyway, back on topic, the Presonus looks good, I think you chose well. Congratulations and good luck with those tunes!;) |
