I found this site a while back. I haven't got around to using any of the patterns yet, but even just listening to them will teach you something. I did load up a few of the patterns yesterday, and replaced the midi instruments with my own percussion samples. You can get some interesting percussion lines this way, and of course add some ethnic flavor to them.
Click on drum patterns if you just want a 1 or 2 bar pattern. If you want whole songs, click song pattern. I prefer the drum patterns of course, because they easier to work with. |

I was just now searching for some educational websites regarding percussion instruments. Specificaly, I was looking for a site that lists various "ethnic" or "world" percussion instruments, along with pictures and sound samples. So far the best one I found is good old wikipedia, but no sound samples. Here>>>

I still don't know what that scraping instrument is called, the wood thing you scrape with a stick or whatever. It sounds kind of like a cricket or frog. My main problem is finding the sound I want in the 1000's of samples I have. Some are labeled, some are not. Also, I want to do a little research so I understand how to use the more exotic percussive intruments.
PS: I found the name of the scraper, it's called a guiro. |

Or is that the Australian Insrument that you tilt from side to side.. sort of like those old litle cans that mooed like a cow when you tilted them! lol
Or is it the one that had a rubber band in it? |

Yep, the digeridoo is Austrailian. It's made out of a long tree trunk, you blow into I think. It sounds really strange. Not really percussion, but interesting all the same. I swear I've heard it used in some sort of EDM song.
Rain sticks are another odd instrument from south america. You flip it over and the beads or beans inside fall to the bottom, sounding a bit like falling rain. |

| Pretty cool. I wonder how long it'll stay online - might be worth downloading the batch and hosting a "mirror". I'll do that when I get a chance. |

I really couldn't sit around while people seem clueless about the Didgeridoo! haha
Clicky for samples and explanations
This may be abit off topic but check out Mantrix, these guys are psy producers/djs who perform with live percussion. |

I don't like psy, but I have to respect any DJ/producer that performs with live instruments. That brings up a whole other topic I'd like to delve into some time.

It's been up for a year at least, but yeah great idea. I don't know many other sites there are like this one. |

I think he was being sarcastic, but yeah, didgeridoo could actually be useful for trance you know, I know one guy who busks, he plays with that and a laptop! It actually sounds a bit like some aciddy trance basses to me.
I have a rainstick, and Its one of the best sounds I've ever heard, really quite beautiful, I think its actually a cactus, hollowed out and the spikes hammered in.
Anyway, thanks for the link. Does anyone know where to get some more midi loops, I actually would like some funk, or some chicane style breakdowns (I've never been able to do them) I don't really want to use them, but I need the instruction because my drum programming is weak as.:(
Thanks |
