Multiple Sound Cards/ Audio Interfaces

I just came back from Long & McQuade with a New audio Midi Interface and a M-Audio Axiom49 midi controller!!!
The Audio Interface is the Edirol FA-66 (Comments welcome lol)
I had my mind set on the Presonus Firebox but when I went to go buy the keyboard and the firebox the salesperson Showed me the Edirol used (2 weeks only) for $170 which is less than half the price of the comparable Presonus unit!
My question is I also have an Sounblaster Xfi Platinum soundcard the (one with the Front Module as well).
My question is how or can I run both without issues? i.e.
I still want to use the system for gaming as well as recording? Is it best to have the system as a dedicated Audio Workstation only.
I have noticed in Most DAW software you can select the Input and Output interfaces? So I want to use the Edirol as the input and the Soundbalster as the general output? Am I defeting the purpose of the Edirol and do I have to configure it in Windows as well?
Also It say in the instsallation manual to set the System to give PRIORITY to BACKGROUND SERVICES instead of Applications? Is this neccessary and will it affect regular Programs like gaming and Windows applications etc?
Sorry for so many questions at once and thank-you in advance! |

well it's possible, but depending on your computer sometimes you might incounter driver conflict etc.
so install it and see how you go.. but first disable your other sound card so there are no conflicts while installing.
when you want to use either sound card just right click my computer icon (not shortcut) and go to properties then select hardware tab!
go to device manager and right click then audio interface you want to enable/disable.
i think this is right but i may be wrong as the right way to go about you 2 audio cards.
good luck dude:) |

| most people have at least 2 asio drivers installed (the one that comes with the DAW, and their soundcards.) |

| If you have problems trying installing ASIO4ALL then run everything through that. |

You shouldnt have a problem, if you do then yeah hit asio4all. I have two, I have no problem.
Basically, just act as though the new interface werent there. That is, set the default card in the control panel (under audio or whatever) to your xfi then just rig your daw (you dont mention what your using) so that it has the new interface selected as input and output, you probably can't run the output through one and input through the other. Did I understand your question right?
Oh yeah re background services, don't worry too much, I honestly can't see a difference on my machine, if you do it, you'll sacrifice screen refresh rates and this will give you jerky GUI's on your plugins. You may get a little more audio processing speed... Maybe. |

Is the ASIO4ALL Opensource ir free? And how do they comare to regular suplied drivers? Then only reason is the FA-66 only has phono or optical (digital) output for sound and I only have and only stereo amp with RCA Inputs.
I guess the other option I never thought of until now is is the Dual-Boot (Multiple OS) scenario to keep thinkgs clean?
THanks for your help guys.
I have not heard any positive or negative comments on the hardware yet? |

I have two soundcards installed and never had a problem...using asio4all makes it easy...
also asio4all is pretty good...my latency in Reason is set to 4ms...and I can work on even quite big projects.
in Ableton however I have to setup latency around 15-20ms...still works as a breeze...no problems here whatsoever... |

I think...if needed you can rely only on asio4all...but I'd suggest trying first if the original ones work...
if they don't then install wdm drivers for both cards and then asio4all...
that's it |
