Max Graham's style

PTR Project
Good evening guys. I've been trying to copy Max Graham's sidechained melodies since long time. He's my favourite producer.
[[ LINK REMOVED ]]

I tried to replicate this bassline which you can hear in background.

Does it sound similar?. Ive made it on V-station, if any of you could give me some directions how to make it more similar I will be very grateful. Any ideas?

POST HAS BEEN EDITED (BY ME) AFTER MY FIRST TRY, I CHANGED THE SETUP. NOW IT SOUNDS BETTER

Your base is too sparcly and not low enough. Lower the cutodd to make it more deep and increase the res.
But I think you will be more succesful if you create your own style and not copy others :)

sure this is true, but it's a great way to learn by imitation.(not saying it's the only way) if he is persistant, his own style will develop over time out of what he has learned from others techniques.

havnt listend to the sample(@ school right now)

get a good subbass going first then layer a mid bass over it and just kinda what subatorm said also...

First you need to make a good kick.
Second, its 80% about the good percussion - makes the good bass better.

Yes its a good way to learn to "recreate" a sound and once you know how to, then you can evolve it into your own sound. I just dont like the "copy" word because it put the whole sentence in a different context.

I cant believe I cant write lol. My first post didnt make sence, ill try again now.

Your base is too sparkly and it has too much high frequencies. This turns your base into a lead and you dont want that. Lower the cutoff and increase the resonance and you should get something more close to what you want to "recreate" :)

Cheers

If you want to make that bass let me give you a few tips.

-Dont just use a saw wave. Try using detuned triangles or Sqaures instead. If your VST allowes for Sync'ed FM give a little fm to it see what it does to the lower frequencies.

-Its about the filter . notice how the lower-mid frequencies that are coming threw make the sound work, if it wasnt for them it would sound just like a subby bass right? that should give you a hint of where to set the filter. 9-11 oclock is a good starting point. Somtimes if the Filter on the VST isnt up to par, I would reccomend downloading a free Filter plug in. you might be using a little more CPU power but well you need a good filter.

-The Sidechain settings.. If you listen to his its not really that prominant. He gives just enough room for the kick to come threw clean. Its not dipping that low for the kick.

-who ever said its just one patch of bass!? well I sures hell didn't one of the most important things ive learned spending so much time on my bass end of my tracks is this. If you are using a VST synth that has sucky low end.. You can beef it up a tad bit by writing a SUB BASS to be layered. Now ofcourse don't just the volume up all the way on the sub channal. Give it little by little till the bass sound fat and juicy. Ofcourse to make sidechaining easier throw them both in a Group channal.

Now I must go play some poker, so when I get back and if im not too tired I will try to create somthing for ya. Please post up your specs, and what Programs/Vst's/Synth you are using. The only thing im good at is programming subby basses.

im sorry I thought i posted a reply yesterday. I heard the second ver. you did. ALOT Better. But not quite the same right? There is a reason for that. Not just mastering, or mixing. Although that will give you that tightness of his Track.

The charicteristic is because of the synth he used, and or other FX he used with that bass patch. For example did he give it a tad bit distortion(i mean very light) or did he use a touch of chorus? these are things you need to familiarize yourself with in order to recreate the sounds or sounds you have in your head.

alot of improvement though!!
