This should be a great party. Amos (Fame) and Justin R. are going to throw down some serious with Switch

Thurs, February 8, Cielo & The Cooperative Review proudly welcome Switch (Dubsided | Defected | UK) for his first proper headlining NYC gig. Dave Taylor is a West London based, hip-hop rooted music freak & studio genius who records under many guises: Switch, which began as a collaboration with Trevor Loveys but is currently Dave's solo work, Solid Groove, Modeler, Induceve (with Jesse Rose) & A. Brucker & Sinden (with Graeme Sinden) to name a few. Dave & his cohorts' West London wobbly house sound, characterized by earth shaking bass subsonics, clever lyrical sampling and a pleasant cacophony of melodic weirdness has exlploded across dance floors the world over. DJs as diverse as Blackstrobe, Sven Vath, Derrick Carter & Flosstradmus routinely cane his music. He's been busy producing 2006's biggest sensation M.I.A.'s new album, in addition to running his Dubsided imprint, which released his tune "A Bit Patchy" that made it onto many of the Ibiza 2006 compilations. In addition to his original works he has been hired by labels as large as Universal, Astralwerks & Virgin to remix the likes of The Chemical Brothers and Hot Chip. Suffice it to say that the dance music world has long thirsted for a sound with universal appeal like Dave's - join us as he drops an Ableton set over Cielo's flawless Funk:tion 1 system. Dubsided’s only US producer DJ Fame & NYC veteran Justin R support.

Fame is great, I haven't heard him play for some months... Switch was nasty when he played with Martinez @ Sully last year, I can't wait to hear him again. He has been working on a lot of hip hop, electro and baltimore club. Would be interesting to check out.

Claudia, I didn't see you there. Did you end up going? I was there from 11:30-2:30 w/o Groundhog since he was still at work when I left the apt :( Caught some of Justin R's set. I thought he built it up nicely. I believe Fame was on from 12:30-1ish, but I was confused as to why he only played half an hour. He was definitely fun and got the crowd moving. Switch came on a little after 1, and track after track was heavy with attitude. I've never listened to any of his sets, so I wasn't sure what to expect. You could hear some of his hip-hop influence, which was interesting. He was going nuts with the mixer and just having a good time. I have a few videos which I'll post later if the sound isn't too crappy. Of course he played "This is Sick" and other familiar tracks I don't know the names of. I'll have to listen to the set posted. One track had lyrics like "Stick it in ... Squeeze it... Nasty, nasty" haha :disbelief

His track selection was pretty different from what we're used to hearing around here recently. I can only describe it as dirty with driving basslines. His mixing definitely needs work though. There were several questionable even downright bad transitions. The crowd was mixed and weird. There were some hiphop guys, flailing nerds, and FOBs. One girl was wearing a loose white t-shirt, prairie skirt, and a bra OVER the shirt. If this is a new trend, she's the first one I've seeing doing it. Also the majority were guys, some of them very desperate. The crowd got better towards the end of the night, but it was definitely not the usual cool crowd I expect at Cielo. Also, there was a Steve Aoki look a like. It could've been him... though I'm pretty sure he had his own gig at Hiro last night.

Aoki DJ'd at Union Square Street Sessions snowboarding from around 7 to around 9 last night... who knows, maybe he went to look at girls with bras over their shirts afterwards...
