| if anything that big were making its way into the earths orbit, im sure there would be people that would see it coming... i figure it would get nuked in space before it made it here. |

nuking is a bad idea, as for seeing it before: sure, the astronomers would, but you wouldn't see it with a naked eye, like they did in that movie |

| If I saw it coming, I'd fly up to it and live on it. Then right before it crashed into the earth, I'd start honking my horn hardcore, telling earth to get out of the way. After the collision, I'd sue earth's insurance company. Buncha bull! |

Not realistic at all, yes. Only the first minute was ok. At the very beginning, directly after the impact, almost nothing should happen except that a huge amount of crustal material would be ejected into earth orbit (that once happened in the very deep past and formed the earth's moon) and a 5km high Tsunami rolls into all directions. The Tsunami will flood the continents around the ocean and the waves will propagate several hundreds km inland destroying everything.
Then, for a short time nothing would happen before the real enferno starts. In this inferno the earth would die roughly 1 to 8 hours after the impact because the ejected material has been distributed around the globe outside the atmosphere and now starts to fall back to the ground. Now, when the material enters earths atmosphere it gets extremely hot becaause of all the friction. The temperatures can easily reach several thousands of degrees Celsius (hotter than the surface of the sun). The resulting unbelievably intense radiation of all the billion tons of material entering the atmosphere will heat the surface of earth up to several thousands of degrees Celsius as well.
Nothing will survive this radiation attack except a few organisms deep in the oceans. These will die as well because the burnt world releases millions of tons of sulphuric acid and these will kill all sea organisms within one year after the impact.
After that the earth gets dark because of all the dust floating around through the atmosphere. This complete darkness (you can't see anything, its completely dark) will last for several thousands of years. Because the sun does no longer reach thee surface of earth it starts to become extremely cold, the whole earth surface drops below the freezing point of water. An ice world, that's the next stage. After roughly 10000 years, the dust will have settled down, the sun will become visible again and it gets warmer again. And if still someone could live on earth he would probably see a second moon in the skies.
So, what happens then? Nobody knows. |
