Here in high-school in the Netherlands, German is mandatory.

when we went to secondary school we took either french or german depending which 'half' of the year group we were in. Those in the top groups on each side minus a couple who were struggling then took the opposite language the next year onwards, so I did 5 years of German & 4 of french, however I'd have loved to have been taught it from a younger age, say 5 or 6 as kids pick languages up so well, and had spanish also been available, i'd have been even happier. I don't remember much french now but a little bit of the german. I can speak more than i can write, and most of it is pigeon now :p
